Hi all,
I dont know if this topic has been discussed before or not. But I was curious as to do externships really help increase ur chances of getting interviewed for specialty programs? Is it just limited to interviews at the place of externship or it strengthens ur application overall. Also, is it different for each specialty. How about Pediatric Dentistry?

Since after 59 views and no response, I guess I'll contribute a little. Yes Pediatric Dentistry do highly regard externship experiences on their applicant applications. That goes for any other specialties that has externship experiences. Why do externships or what are benefits of externships, type/search "externship" in SDN ADVANCED SEARCH function and you'll see A LOT of info.

This is a great question, but if I would have to guess, then I would say it would be difficult for an international dentist to do externships and my reasons are:
1. often externship programs requires US dental school transcripts, NBDE Part 1 scores, and letters of recommendation from residency directors, liability/malpractice insurance from a US dental school (the school that you're current attending).

2. most of externship programs (OMFS) that I've looked at, they all require their externs to be a current US dental student.

Listen, there are always exceptions to the rule. Find out what type of externship you want to do first, then figure out which residency program you want to do an externship at, and then call that residency externship director to see if you can apply. It's as simple as that. Liability/malpractice insurance can be purchased from an outside source if you can't be covered by a US dental school.

BTW, I just finished my 2nd day of externship out of 3 weeks at Univ. of MN. Having a great time. This time around, I'm going to keep it hush-hush so no one will think that by posting everything I experienced during my externship is thinking that I'm "the ****" or "Mr. OMFS"! 🙄

Here at the LSU New Orleans/Charity hospital OMFS residency we take foreign externs all the time...students, dentists, whatever....but when it comes to applying, the med school requires graduation from a US dental school.

Obviously you're a resident at LSU so you would know more, but I'm simply going by your departmental's website. According to the website, "The requirements are that the student be registered as a junior or senior dental student from an accredited school in the United States."

Now I come to think of it, a foreign dental student (dark hair super skinny tall dude with really choppy English) did start to do his externship there while I was just finishing up my month and you were just starting up in the first week of July.

Who knows, the foreign dental students or dentists must have a whole another set of requirements if they wish to apply for an externship..... 😕

I'd like to hear about your experience. I think there are many people who would benefit from hearing about your experience. Don't stop posting because a few people give you crap. Who caresw what they think? The majority of us find hearing about other programs and externships beneficial.

Yep, I know of a dental student from England who did a OMFS externship at UIC.

I have take my part1 boards and have a score of 90, decent gpa and toefl score ..i have applied and interviewd at dental schools also, just waiting to hear from them ..just thought that as schools are offering externship to students enrolled in US dental schools , maybe a foreign trained dentist can increase there chance of getting an acceptance into a DDS/ DMD program if they have this kind of experience on their resume' and also the exposure to do an externship will be so valuable...!!

so how do you go about finding these externships?! I'm interested in applying to some, but we dont get summers off anymore, so I don't know where to find time for them. Someone please enlighten me? 🙂 Merry Christmas

Speaking for OMFS externships:
Just about every OMFS residency can have an externship. Some externships are more formal, advertised and elaborate than others, but every residency can have one if you call and see if you may apply to it.

Key thing is call and ask, some residencies have very informative departmental websites, some even with externship application that you can download. Be active and look around.

About not having anymore time off to do externships, well, you have to make time if you wish to participate in an externship. You have to apply with your dental school to give you time off of school for you to participate in externships. Most students only do externships during holiday breaks (one week during spring break and two weeks during winter break, etc.). If you wish to participate in a longer period of time, then you must ask to be excused from classes and/or clinic.

Example:

At NSU Dental, for any "off campus" (externships) rotation that you wish to participate in outside of vacation time, we must complete and fill out an "off campus" rotation application stating dates of participation, who, when, and where.....

Once the form is completed, then two signature must be obtained from:
1) Pre-doc Clinic Director - to verify that you as the student are not behind in clinic because getting your DMD degree is first and foremost. If you're behind in your procedural requirements, then you are not allowed to leave campus

2) Dean of Academic Affairs - to verify that you're a student in good standing, you're at least top 50% of your class, and no failures are on your transcript. Further to provide you malpractice/liability insurance during your "off campus" rotation participation

Once those two signatures are obtain, our externship participation is approved by the dental school, this does not mean you are accepted to the externship by the externship residency (some externship are very competitive but some are freebies where they allow anyone to participate). Externships has their own participant requirements.

When I participated in a month long externship this past summer, I had to apply for 3 weeks off of mandatory clinic days. I missed 3 weeks of scheduled clinic days. One week summer vacation, 3 weeks excused, total to one month participation.

Currently, I'm doing a 3-week externship where two weeks are winter/holiday vacation and I had to apply for 1 week to be excused from clinic. I'll be missing the first week of school for Winter semester to total up to my 3-week externship.

As you can see, you have to make time to participate in externship if you wish to do one beyond vacation time or make time period if there are no vacation time available. You also have to be sure that you're squared away at your dental school first so they let you go and excuse you from classes and /or clinic. You also have to be sure that you are accepted to the externship that you wish to participate in. A lot of things need to be done before one can participate.

This is just my experience. Every externships that I have applied to and have or am participating has very formal application process.

This is probably a really stupid question but it seems like most people don't do externships at their own programs (ie. if I were to do one at Temple). It seems like it would be easier to manage your time and possibly still see patients? Or would this defeat the whole purpose of externships?

I did an externship at my own school. It's definitely worth it if you're interested in your program. Even though you go to dental school there you really don't get a feel for the specialty program unless you spend some significant time with the dept. and see what the residents go though day in and day out.

I think its a great idea. If you work really hard you will impress one of the most important people you can--the OMS program director at your school who will be writing letters of recommendation for your application not only to other externships but to actually apply for residency. At some schools you may be able to get enough exposure that an externship at your own school isn't as advantageous, but at mine I felt like it was a good idea...

I'll be there from mid May to mid June. Any current residents from there on SDN? Have any of you current residents externed there before? I also plan on submit my PASS application sometime in June 2005. I may do one last externship with Cook County in Chicago at the end of summer (August). If I do one last one in August, then I'll have a little under 4 months worth of externships!

Here are all my externships:
04/2003 - University of MN (3 days)
04/2004 - University of MN (3 days)
06/2004 - LSU NO (one month)
12/2004 - University of MN (3 weeks)
05/2005 - UTSW (one month) - just accepted
08/2005 - Cook County, IL (3 weeks) - projected/anticipated

15 weeks total

If you search back through his posts, there was a long detailed thread about Yah-E's externship somewhere which was pretty good. I think it was Yah-E but I don't remember things too well these days.

I'm definitely interested in the Chicago area for various reasons and I've heard first hand from current OMFS residents that Cook County is the place to be trained at out of all Chicago OMFS residencies (Loyola and UIC).

There will be many other OMFS residencies that I'll be applying to without me checking it out before hand. I plan on applying to roughly 16 residencies.
