hi everyone,
I’m a sophomore and I have a few questions. These last few semesters, I haven’t been involved in organizations and I have not been active in the pre optometry organization. I have been focusing on my classes. I do not have much work experience, but I am planning on working at an optometrist’s office this summer. Is it likely that I will be asked during interviews why I was not active in extracurricular activities?

I did not have any pre optometry organizations during my undergrad, so all the experience I had was from working and shadowing. Optometry schools will not ask you why you were not active in extracurricular activities, but they might ask you these questions:
-How do you know that optometry is a good fit for you?
-What do you know about the profession?
-Do you know how the profession is evolving over time?

It is hard to answer these questions without having shadowing and work experience in the field, so make sure that you are getting plenty of exposure while you work at the optometrist office this summer. I worked at one optometry office and shadowed at several others to make sure that I was getting all the exposure I could get and this really helped me during my interviews. It also helps to explain why you chose optometry over other health professions, especially if you tried shadowing those other professions. Make sure to attend the open houses and on campus events of the schools you are interested in applying, they could share valuable information to these questions too. Attending their events also shows your interest in their programs and helps in deciding which schools are good fits for you. Hope this is useful and good luck!
