What is a good extra-curricular resume? How many activities (volunteer, research, shadowing, work) constitute a good to excellent extra-curricular resume?

You should probably...

1. Shadow dentists for at least 50 hrs, 100 preferred but the more the better.
2. Do research if possible. Try to contribute as much as possible rather than say, dish washing. It would be even nicer if you have publications.
3. Volunteer at hospital/clinic.

I'd say shadowing is a must have, but if you have all of the above then you shouldn't worry much about your EC.

Its not quantity but quality. It would be better to do 3 or 4 activities and stick with them for a long period of time (2 or 3 years maybe) than to do 20 activities (each only lasts for a couple days...). Also, they really want to see whether you have compassion and commitment for what you are doing; i.e, they will be likely to ask what those activities have taught you...Also, 20 or 25 hours per week would be more than enough.
