Extra science classes for non science majors.

This kind of ties in with the last thread I posted. For all of you who have been accepted and were non science majors, did you take a bunch of extra science classes, and if so WHAT ONES? Also wondering what the chances are of just taking the pre reqs and still getting accepted.

I took two semesters of ochem, I know some schools require just one. I also took bio chem last semester, this semester I am taking cell, anatomy, and psychobiology.

Whatever you do...DO NOT take nutrition...fundamentals of human nutrition, or nutritional science...a HORRID course. I took it this semester and am struggling to get an A...though I probably will get an A, it was alot of hard work and we'll see this wednesday. Meaningless facts are in this course and while it could be interesting, the guy who teaches at UF is a horrible professor...but incredibly nice guy. I am easily getting an A in organic chem, but this class just bugged the *bleep* out of me.

Nonscience major and just took the basics
2 Bio
2 Chem
2 ORgo
2 Physics
All semesters with labs

I was a psychology major but took several extra science courses. Besides the required science classes I took anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, and histology. I figured there will be enough new stuff to learn in dental school without having to see some of this stuff for the first time. As far as getting in without them, I don't think you would have any problems as long as you do well in the required science classes. If those other classes were a big deal dental schools would make them requirements.

I'm also non-science and I had your same worries. Thus, I did end up taking a few upper division science courses like physiology, cell bio, biochem and microbio. Even though they are not required, I'm glad I actually took them.. as I'm hoping these classes will help a bit when I enter d-school. In other words, if I knew I would be accepted without taking them, I would still take them especially biochem, micro and physio since these classes will be covered at d-school and you'll have a small "head start".

I'm a (freshman) bio major, and right now, the only thing that is keeping me from flipping out about the upper level bio classes i'm going to take is that I would have taken them anyway as a non-science major.

I took biochem, and anatomy as extra courses. I thought they'd help in d-school.

I think maybe I'll just take my prereqs, and if my sci gpa is where I want it to be I won't risk takeing the upper level to bring it down, or at least wait till i'm accepted then take them my last semester. If at the end I feel that I don't have a strong ap, i'll take some extra ones to give it a boost. Anyone else with comments or experiences about this please reply!

Taking those upper level classes during your last semester would be a great idea. Then that material would be fresh starting dental school. I don't know where you plan on going but usually you'll see anatomy, biochemistry, histology, physiology, and microbiology in your first year.

extra science courses i took are: intro to Forestry, atmospheric sciences, weather and climate, general geology, etc.

This are iin adition to upper level ones i will take.

In addition to the prereqs (a year of ochem, etc.) I took a head and neck anatomy course (cadaver experience included - it was awesome), microbiology, embryology, botany, an upper division general zoology course, and cell biology. I think you have a good chance if you just take the prereqs. However, a positive point was made in a couple of my interviews about the additional science courses and my liberal arts degree (I guess the good grades and course load proving I coule "hack it").
