How are we all doing? hope you all had a great summer!

I was thinking about a post that stated that it isn't all about the GPA. It is a relief to know that but that does not diminish the most important aspect of what we need to learn.

However, I am an older student and as such, I work many hours a week in order to pay for everything. I attend school part-time. I recognize that my ability to work near full-time and attend school shows my time management skill. But, I still want to improve my chances (my gpa took a big hit last year...so I am in my rebuilding semesters) of getting in.

Does anyone have suggestions on what "outside" activity would be doable for an older student with very little time on hand. I get some days off in the week (usually no more than 1-2 days). Any suggestions greatly appreciated in advance!👍 👍 👍

I also work full time and go to school in the evenings. I don't have weekdays off, but I use my evenings wisely. M,T,W I take classes, and Th night I volunteer in a hospital. Last year it was a children's hospital, this year an inpatient pharmacy. I'm also training for a marathon. I don't know if the admissions committees will consider these things positively, but between volunteering (4 hrs/week) and running (40 miles x 8.5 min/mil = 6 hrs/week) I do show interests outside of work and school. Anyway, I would suggest volunteering in a hospital. Its fun, you get healthcare exposure, and learn more about the profession.

I second this - I volunteered in a hospital pharmacy for 4 months before I was hired on. It was a great experience and it helped me get a foot in the door.

good helps🙂

I agree with the hospital volunteering as well. It's very important to get some pharm experience in your ec's and from my experience, volunteering at a hospital is much more flexible than if you had to be hired at a retail store. For one thing, I dont know of any retails that even allow volunteering. At my VA, we come whenever we like and they are always super appreciative of all the volunteers that come. (They're practically dependent on us for filling rx's, I swear 🙄 ) It's super fun and I forget that I don't get a paycheck most of the time.
