don't worry about it...just make sure you have done at least a few things that are meaningful and that you can talk about at interviews. At five interviews, they could not have cared less what my ECs were. One asked but quickly went another direction.
EC should develop you into a better person so at interviews and in life you're not a goof ball that no one can connect with.
O yeah, the most important thing, just do things you enjoy. Your enthusiasm will show when you actually have to talk about them.
But to answer your question, stuff I've done that they may have remotely cared about when reviewing my app:
Pre-Dent Club Officer
Volunteer Tutor for kids
intramural sports
big on outdoor activities
AND if your grades aren't good, STOP doing the ECs and get them up...they won't care about them if the grades don't cut it.
i would say do a couple of things but dont overlaod. in my interviews we didnt even talk about any of my ECs, and i did a lot of stuff. i plan on pulling back and just doing the min. of what i have left EC wise. for the rest of my time i am just going to chill and i am pumped about that

It is not quantity, it is the quality of the work that you do in your ECs that count for anything.
I agree, the aadsas only lets you put ten activities on your app anyway, so try to do ten or less, and put a lot of time into those! I have done tons and tons of CS work, and a lot of it was spread to lots of groups, because I was an RA, so I tried to plan things that would interest lots of different kinds of people. Long story short, I couldn't fit half the things I've done on my app anyway. And, they ask how many hours you put into each thing, and I had still put lots of hours into them, but not nearly as many as I had really spent.
Obviously, I didn't do that stuff in order to put it on my app, but the amount of CS work I did does help to compensate for and explain my somewhat low GPA. (3.26). It's not that low because I was watching TV or anything...
Don't just do things so it will look good on your application. Doing things Just to boost your application is a poor reason to participate in activities. Do things because they are things that you want to be doing and because they make you a better person.
I agree with this ^ guy, do whatever you enjoy, they just want to see that you're not spending your free time doing calculus or whatever.
For instance I play a few instruments, paint miniatures, did some volunteer work for the homeless in Portland, volunteered at an organic farm/grower's co-op, I was the intramural cribbage champion...
It seems the more random the better!

interesting...i was always under the impression that ECs were really important.

I recommend doing something meaningful and stick with it for a long time because it shows you have dedication and a real purpose for your work.
They may be, remember, all that any of us know is what worked for us. In the end you're going to have to make the final decision on what your application does and doesn't need...

If you're planning on starting up some new EC's it may be worth looking into some activities that will set you appart from your fellow applicants.
Personally, I've played the bagpipes for eight years and was part of a crew team in college.
Of course ... as many have already stated ... you should only get involved in activities that truly interest you. (You'll probably regret picking up the bagpipes or rowing just for the sake of making your application interesting ... 😀)
