I was just wondering about EC activities. I have an eight month old daughter, and go to school or study during any free time I have... i have worked in dental offices and have lots of shadowing and volunteering experience and good GPA... what kinda emphasis is put on these extras? Will they take into account that I have a child and not alot of free time? will work experience etc balance it out? just wondering... I am so stressed about every aspect of getting into dental school its not even funny. 😉

Don't worry. Saying that you are a mother is one hell of a EC activity. If there are people who are not willing to count that as a EC or cut you some slack over it then the problem is on their end not yours. If you are curious I could ask around to see what type of responses I get at a dental school here in Boston.

If it helps, I know a woman who has a kid and is currently attending Tufts. She is actually doing very well academically. So having a kid with all the responsibility can only mean that you are one of the more mature individuals.

What about working at your parents place of business all your life for free? Such as an autoshop or something?

I have a six-year-old, whom I home school, plus I work and attend class. Outside of my shadowing and volunteering I have just about zero ECs.

At my recent interview I heard nothing but how impressive it was that I pull it all together. There was no question of why I have no ECs--the attitude was quite the opposite.

Baby+lots of shadowing+good GPA seem good to me. So relax.

How could you be working for free?😕

More like helping out. Not everyones parents own their own business. When they do I guess some of us are expected to help out around there as we do around the house.

I met a woman at my Creighton interview who has three kids who still live in South Carolina with her husband while she attends dental school at Creighton. She still is married and visits them on weekends. Not that I understand why she is doing this, I am just saying that there are some woman who get into dental school with children so if it is something you really want then go for it.
