Going to be a first year. Since you already get a lot of clinical exposure during your 3rd and 4th years, do med. students get involved in a lotta extracurriculars? I'll probably try and continue my hobbies ... but other than research, do med students tend to focus on their studies?

Since ECs other than research have little import for residencies, most people tend to let them fade away as their time gets monopolized with coursework. But if it's something important to you personally and not too time consuming, by all means keep it up.

Most people in my class concentrate on coursework. However, there are a few medical student organizations on campus, and a handful of people are involved; probably a few hours a week time commitment.

Most people in my class are doing research during their summer between M1 and M2. The others are MD/PhD students who do research during the year.

As far as your hobbies, definitely keep them up as they will keep you sane.

I've stayed involved with extracurriculars, and it has been a huge help when it comes to keeping myself happy. If you really want to keep up with hobbies in your life, you will find the time during your first two years. You may not want to spend 20 hours a week on hobbies from the get go, but once you've settled into medical school a little bit, don't be afraid to try your hand at adding some non-medical school things to your schedule.
