Hi! I'm a second year at ucla...and I haven't gotten involved in any extracurriculars. I think I need to find some good activities and stay involved. I just don't know what to try. Any suggestions? What did some of you do?

Become SHA when they recruit next year. Join the daily bruin. Join Helping Hands. Go to Skid Row and help the homeless. Do research. Join one of the billion and one clubs at ucla. Apply to teach at Covel or AAP tutoring. UCLA has so many opportunities for extra curricular involvement that there are just too many to list.

Just find something you are interested in and do something! 🙂

what sorts of things should I expect to be doing when just starting out in research with a professor? and how do I know the lab/research position is a good one to stick with??

Well when I was a second year I emailed like every professor in the neuro dept and ask them if they had any openings in their labs. I was interested in neuro and was a neurosci major. Some replied some didn't. The ones that did usually invited me over to their labs with a resume. They would then talk about what they did and let me know if they had openings. I eventually got involved with Dr. Anna Taylor's lab. Ethanol's effect on the neuroimmune system mostly. So we have a bunch of drunk rats in the lab. Since I left they've taken a couple of people. But if you are interested in operating on rats, implanting cannulas in their brains, using a dental drill to drill through rat cranium, etc. its a fun lab.

Just email professors and see if they hav eopenings. If they do look up their research and if it interests you then make an appointment with them telling them you'd like to join their lab.

So how detrimental is it if you don't have any research? I'm not really into that kinda stuff...would it be okay to replace that and do a bunch of other EC's?

This is such a heart-warming thread...UCLAMAN helping out uclakid...like father and son...gotta see the humor in that.

UCLAMAN has mentioned lots of things that are attractive to medical schools - volunteerism, research, etc. With so many options one of the most important things to consider is whether or not you'll enjoy it. It's always wise, if there's a choice, to pursue activities that you may be passionate about.

research is not a necessity. Do what you enjoy as asclepius has said. just don't not do anything. make sure you are doing something or several somethings that you really invest a lot of yourself into.

Hey UCLAMAN,
Nice to see there is another Rat surgeon on sdn. I do brainstem cannulations on rats too. I think that is the funnest part of my lab work. We are both Rat MD's!
