While in medical school I worked doing odd jobs because their schedules were compatible with that of my school. These positions were not glamorous--landscaping, volunteering as an adult reading tutor--but I felt like they were worthwhile none the less. Should I even bother mentioning them or will they seem so low-brow that they'll be more amusing than helpful?

By all means list it, and in the explanation section, write a few sentences on why those jobs are important to you. If you do it right, it will help you driving home the fact that you are a well-balanced applicant.

Let's just say that an individual from my school last year showed me his ERAS application after he matched this March. He was AOA, honors student, matched at Mass General for medicine last year, and he listed things like "golf course caddy driver" as his summer job, and he even listed college jobs. He gave a good description for every entry he listed, and gave their significance. And I think the all-roundedness and careful details are factors that helped him matched at his first choice, the fabled House of God.

I agree, you should mention them. Being a tutor is a plus for academic programs that like teachers, and if nothing else, it shows that you kept busy during med school and weren't a book worm or a party animal.

Just to get our House of God trivia straight...

Mass General is Man's Best Hospital

The House of God is the Beth Israel (now the Beth Israel Deaconess)
