I know it's the wrong forum, heck wrong website, but....

Anyone watch this on TLC, what's the catch. I just saw this show and some person paid $5 for $500 worth of food. We are all talking about COL and if I will be able to eat while in PT school so this show looks like it would benefit some of us.

I saw the first season of this show a few months back. Me and the gf went hard after seeing how much money these ppl saved. It really is crazy, but it is not as straight forward as you would hope. If you are trying to eat relatively healthy or are not in the market to buy 10, 20 or 40 of something then it may not be worth it.

Example: Maybe you get a coupon for 20 cans of chef boyardee for $0.50 a can, but you can only get that deal if you buy all 20.

There are a bunch of other examples you could add/subtract. There are some great deals out there though. You have to put in a great deal of time, and that is why some of those ppl talk about spending 6hrs going through the coupon process. If you have a large family and then I definitely think it may be worth the investment in time and money. A lof of ppl get addicted to "couponing." Who knows, if I am ever a family man, maybe I will be too.

Yeah, I didn't watch the show, but I've always thought I need to be more up on couponing- although, I like to buy fresh wholefoods and I'm not so sure I want to buy in bulk (which is where most of the super savings comes).

A ex-co-worker of my SO does this with his wife at Target. They find "double coupons" and then end up getting hundreds of dollars of "store credit" and have gotten a new tv among other things because of it.

Example:
You find a manufactor coupon for mascara that is buy one, get one free. Then Target has an ad where this same mascara is on sale for say, 50 cents off. You then go to Target and literally buy every tube of mascara that they have... When you go to the register, the cash register computer doesn't understand the double coupon- you have buy one, get one free- but you also have 50 cents off- so the computer doesn't understand that "every other" mascara is free- thus you get 50 cents off EVERY tube and if you buy say, 100 tubes, you're getting a credit of $50! So the store actually owes YOU money.

Do that with a coupe things and you can rack up a couple hundred dollar credit! (But then, oh wait, you have to sell all those stupid mascara tubes on ebay to get rid of them... Unless you have 100 girlfriends that need a tube!)

Couponing can be a big hassle- but there are websites that can help, like grocerygame.com. it isn't worth the time for me, but i still look for good deals when i can.
target does put out coupons for produce from time to time. i find the easiest/ best way for me to save is to read the sunday paper to see what specials are going on (and save coupons i come across for foods i already buy).
