Extremely poor social life causing depression and hurting grades, help?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There are plenty of ways to make friends. I am sure your school has clubs, intramural sports, organizations, etc. Join them. If you are depressed maybe you are spending too much time looking at porn on 4chan and not enough time exercising, getting sun, throwing the frisbee around.

I don't have much of a social life because I chose to. I have people I can talked to via clubs and organizations I'm involved in, volunteering, work, etc, and that keeps me content enough. Sometimes it is hard to not have friends, but if you want to be a doctor then do it. Find ways to convince your parents volunteering is important. Talk to people in classes.

You can always transfer to a larger school away from your parents where there are more students on campus and more opportunities.

Just be friendly. Seriously. Offer people gum or if they are coming late and sit next to you, tell them whats going on in a polite way. Met plenty of cute girls from this

+9999 brilliant advice. I have met plenty of cute girls and just made friends from this. If you are nice to people they will be nice to you.

Well, it seems like you could use some help with *networking* skills.

To find people in your area with similar interests, one possible option is to simply look online for communities about your interests - let's say you're a bicyclist: look up an international bicycling community and make a post there saying "Seeking bicycling buddies in X town." Then coordinate meeting up for coffee.

This is more or less how I have met a ton of my permanent adult friends.

+10000. I have done the same.. with sportsbikes... though thats one of those things you shouldnt do just to get people to like you or you probably will end up roadkill. Sportsbikes are great if you have a passion for riding and a knack for predicting every possible way the cars around you can hit you and preemptively avoid that.

Awww, it's good to know I'm appreciated. 😀

In general, I wouldn't so much "take up a hobby to find friends" as "pick a hobby you're into, even/especially if it seems rare and unusual, then find people who are into the hobby, inside and outside of your area, and socialize with them."

In my case... I've met many, many friends through my nerdy hobbies; I enjoy tabletop roleplaying games, the works of H.P. Lovecraft and his contemporaries (as you might have guessed from my name), and assorted forms of science fiction.

It's somewhat counterintuitive and pleasantly surprising how many people you can meet locally just by broadcasting your quirky interests. The quirkier the interest, the more likely the other people who are into it will look up and take note when you post the "Seeking people to join me in this activity in City, State" note on a forum or on Craigslist - because they, like you, are looking for social outlets.

I think those of us who grew up in the era of Usenet had an advantage in terms of using the Internet socially. You could find an enormous list of topics that people might want to talk about and simply trawl through it looking for things you were interested in.

I was being sarcastic about the 4chan thing, heard of the site, never actually been on it.
