I admitted a patient yesterday with pretty significant cataracts. Her optometrist is selling her eye drops that she has been told will fix them. I have not encountered this before, and I would expect most optometrists would call this quackery too. Is this common?

Do you really believe everything you read?

Better work on those journal reading skills.

Did I state I believed it? I merely posted the article.

Hater.

This study is crap- was done by the company that holds the patent to the compound. It was a small series and the results have never been reproduced outside of Russia, where the study was done.

Haha... look at the list of indications for this guy's eyedrops:

Additional benefits
Other than senile cataract, N-acetylcarnosine may have other clinical benefits. The unique and patented N-acetylcarnosine lubricant eye drops formula of Can-C could also provide beneficial results with the following eye-disorders:

  • Presbyopia
  • Open-angle primary glaucoma
  • Corneal disorders
  • Computer vision syndrome
  • Eyestrain
  • Ocular inflammation
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Retinal diseases
  • Vitreous opacities and lesions
  • Complications of diabetes mellitus and other systemic diseases
  • Contact lens difficulties, particularly with soft contact lenses

Though we are laughing at this guy, he is probably having the last laugh from his yacht on the French Riviera!

Sent her home today. She has follow up with the ophtho service. I advised her and her husband to find a different optometrist.

It sure looked like you were endorsing it to me. That's seriously scary. And do you honestly believe that ophthalmologists wouldn't know about an eye drop that actually had been proven to work for cataracts?

Nope, never endorsed it. Just posted the relevant article with the questionable compound for your convenience. Hop off my nuts and add something meaningful to the conversation.

Are you in high school or college? Either way there is a pre-optometry forum which might better suit your knowledge base.

The question asked was "are there eye drops that fix cataracts?" The answer was a link to a study article suggesting "yes." Why would you answer this way unless you believed the reference?

How is posting a link to a pubmed article an endorsement? 😕

Its the same thing as putting a sign on your front lawn or buying billboard space to spread an idea.

He probably meant to say: Hurdle off his gonads.

The more I read and see your condescending attitude, the more frightened I am for the well being of the patients. Smh....

Instead of proving to everyone you scored high on your nerd exams and kissed a little gluteus to get where you are, how about discussing the article in a more professional manner?

Hurdle? I think he had a house built on his gonads.

But seriously, it is a bad article based on bad science. Getting older would be a lot easier with eye drops for cataracts.

whoever invents effective eyedrops that actually fixed cataracts will make billions. 😀
Good idea to send them to ophthalmology, IMHO.
