As some of you may have seen, we did the first FaceTime medical consult on the iPhone a couple weeks ago. It generated a lot of buzz around the world in various Mac circle and others. I regret that podiatry wasn't mentioned in many of the stories, because I feel like it could have brought some positive light to the profession (Links below).

As a follow up, I just left the OR for an emergency and did a live FaceTime right from the OR with Drs. David Armstrong (podiatry) and Joseph Mills (vascular surgery) from University of Arizona. See attached photo.

We've arrived at a time when you can quickly consult a colleague by video with a simple tool that everyone carries in their pockets! The potential is enormous.

That's awesome. No biggie on not mentioning "podiatrists" but you are right it would have been really nice. I think they just wanted a short sweet write up of "doctors" using this iphone feature without getting specific. Perhaps there will be more articles on this and they can mention it. I have seen you in various videos and interviews and this would be a great way to shine some light on the profession.

I have to ask because I'm available for an upgrade here soon on Verizon: how many doctors are using the iphone as their smartphone of choice in the hospital? From Epocrates to the Merck Manual there are endless programs available on phones that can benefit health care workers. And I was thinking about getting the Droid X that just came out but after seeing so many iphone hospital applications and front-face camera benefits I'm thinking of either switching networks or continue waiting for the Iphone to come to Verizon. But even with the latter it's bound to have problems as a 1st generation.

I agree that this has the potential to become huge. Some things that would be nice for the iphone when using FaceTime that I hope to see:
1) A bigger screen: Iphone should make a 4.3" screen in addition to their original screen size. This obviously allows for a bigger picture and ability to see more when using FaceTime.

2) A higher megapixel FaceTime camera with smoother transitions/video and less fragmentation. This is an absolute must.

3) FaceTime with usage outside of the Iphone network. I see what Jobs is trying to do here by keeping it private b/w AT&T users but I hate this 'secret society' mentality.

4) Not too important but a cool feature nonetheless: a projector on the side, such as a built in pico projector that is small enough to not bulk up the phone yet still produce a clear, crisp 50"+ image.

This is great work!! Keep up your hard work Dr. Lee, day by day you and Dr Armstrong are making history and bringing publicity to our great profession and making all of us proud! My goal is to do that someday!

I'm new to the forum, and I trained under Dr. Armstrong. I'm sorry but I don't believe that Dr. Rogers has come anywhere near Dr. Armstrong's accomplishments yet, though he may some day in the future. Those are pretty big shoes to fill.

Dr. Armstrong receives a lot of press but would never have self promoted himself as Dr. Rogers did by starting this post. Just my opinion, and I've met them both.

I think that the applications on smartphones is incredible, and we've only started to see what's coming down the road. Although epocrates has been an invaluable tool, I've also started using Medscape's version of the same type of pharmaceutical program. Medscapes free version includes OTC medications and herbal medications, vitamins and supplements. Although epocrates offers this, their version is not free.

There are features of the iPhone I love and features of the Blackberry I love. I prefer buttons to touch screens, but the iPhone has a bigger screen than the Blackberry and seems more intuitive to use, though I believe the Blackberry is often more reliable. I haven't tried the Android, but hear it's a great device.

I hope to be contributing more to this forum, and have visited for quite a while, though I just registered. I've met Dr. Rogers and he's very bright and knows exactly what he wants and where he wants to be, and I believe that I'm 99% sure I know who PADPM is and that I actually rotated through his residency program years ago. He's a very bright and pretty interesting guy if he's who I think. I'm still trying to figure out if I know Podfather.

The iPhone may bring a whole new meaning to the term "PODcasting".

What an interesting comment. I did not see this post as Dr. Rogers "self-promoting himself." I thought he was merely trying to be informative.

Quit flaming. Nowhere in the article or this post does Dr. Rogers directly or indirectly claim any type of superiority over Dr. Armstrong in terms of accomplishments. Promotion or not, I'm glad to see podiatry in the news and just because someone posts an interesting video or article of themselves doesn't mean it's some type of greedy self promotion bragging about accomplishments.
