Ran across a FAFSA thread in the allo forum. I almost forgot about it. I don't have my taxes done but will just get it started. Don't forget to apply for financial aid early folks. Happy New Year!

You need your taxes to submit your FAFSA. I just submitted mine today, and you can too.

Exact numbers are not needed for taxes--just estimates. Use your numbers from last year and give a good estimate. Whenever you do recieve your taxes, you can log back in after it is processed and fill out a "FAFSA correction."

I have filled out my FAFSA for 6 years now, and have always sent it in on January 1st prior to recieving tax information. This gets your processed early to make you eligible for more financial aid.

Just went on the website and see I can't proceed without Tax info. Thanks for the advice on putting in estimates.

I have just come in with my GC and no tax report to file How do I proceed?

What do you mean by being eligible for "more financial aid"? I know in undergrad it is important because we get federal aid and grants but for grad school like medical school we don't get anything or do we? 😕

Any federal loan requires the FAFSA be filed.

I know that but just because you submitted your FAFSA early doesn't mean you are eligible for more loans or do you? Thank you.

Local scholarships/grants from your school and PERKINS LOANS, which schools cannot give out to everyone.

Ah... thanks for the info. When will DO schools send you your fanancial stuff (i.e., what loans you're qualified for and what scholarships/grants you're offered, how much, etc...)? Let's say I will have my fafsa filed online at the end of this month. Thank you.

It's best to check with your individual schools because most of them also have other forms for you to fill out. If you are selected for verification you will have to send in signed copies of your Federal tax return. After they have ALL the paperwork, they will begin sending award notices. Note that some schools will not send you the information you need for financial aid until you have paid your deposits. Some schools are faster than others...so, like I said before, you should check with the individual schools.

Do we have to wait till we have an acceptance before filling it out??

no, there's a space for up to six schools. none of which must you already be accepted to.
