I'm a D.O. student. I really thought I at least passed. I studied hard. I wanted to go into stroke or something (perhaps through neurology or IM). I start rotations in Sept. and I have to move also. Does anyone think that in 3 weeks I can get a passing score if I have the motivation to study? Does anyone know of anyone failing and retaking and how long did they study, and how much better did they do? Would I be ok with getting a passing score? Since I don't have to report it, is it ok to just pass or only good if I get a decent score?

Any info will be great appreciated!! Thanks

so sorry about that... what was your nbme exam score if you took it? It may help determine if perhaps you had a fluke come test day

Sorry to hear about your dilemna 🙁 .

I'm not exactly sure which test you are talking about- Is it the usmle or complex? If you are referring to the usmle- You would not be able to retake this test until 6 weeks has passed from the date that your scores were released. That is the NBME's rule.

thanks for your help,

daisygirl: I'm talking about USMLE. and 60 days would've already passed by the time i sit for it again.

I scored a 56 on the NBME. that's a good thought. obviously that was before studying for boards. I guess I made an improvement. perhaps not enough. I'm not sure what that means though. (a 56) Do you?

I'm leaning more on wanting to take it. I just don't know if 3 weeks is enough.

thanks

I think that, statistically, you could probably take it right now and pass (assuming you're not wasted 😉 ). Seriously, I think if you READ First Aid through one more time and READ BRS Path through one more time, you should be in good shape. Taking the test the 1st time was a good preparation for the TYPES of questions you've had. I would also do the paid NBME online exams for 400 more questions if you have time.

Good luck -- keep us posted!!!

P.S. For both neurology and internal medicine, a passing score is just FINE and you will get a residency spot somewhere.

ashtraveler...i am a DO student as well and I am in the same situation so I want to know...will it hurt us to retake it and to have the score report showing a failure the first time through?

It very well might negate the fact that you ever took it, especially if you are a borderline pass the second time around. If you can absolutely rock the test the second time, go for it...if not, I wouldnt bother.
