Today I failed my first college midterm in "Biomechanics". I will be extremely lucky if I scrape 40% and it's worth 25% of the course grade. I have been a wreck since it ended because I didn't even finish half the test. I waited until the last minute (2 days ago) to learn the most important concepts.

I just feel so stupid for failing an exam in a class that isn't even supposed to be difficult. Can somebody please reassure me that this isn't the end of the world? I feel so miserable that I can't even start studying for the 5 midterms I have in the next 2 weeks. Thanks :scared:

take it as a lesson to not wait till the last minute. Keep moving forward, and start studying now so you can score high on your 5 midterms. Good luck

Whatever you put in is what you get out. I got off to a pretty rough start as a freshman but come second year you'll be a veteran and your study habits will improve. Dental schools will see improvements in your grades.

Also, just because a class was easy to a few people or a group of people doesn't always mean that it's easy. I've been bit in the ass for thinking that Engineering Calculus was "like high school calculus." Stupid me.

First off, take a deep breath. You are far from doomed, my friend. College is more rigorous than high school, and likewise dental school is more challenging than college. Everyone has fallen flat on their face at some point in their academic careers, either failing a test or a whole course. If the say they haven't then they are either lying or they are not human. I have failed a couple of tests in my time. I have learned that the trick is not to base your self worth on your academic performance (you are NOT the sum of your grades, so don't base your emotional well-being on them), learn from your mistakes (perhaps you should start on the material right away and not two days before an exam to learn key points), get back on the horse (don't be discouraged by a past performance, be persistent in trying to comprehend and master the subject - trust me, this pays off!), and place things into perspective (it's one midterm, you have a mountain of credits to get through, and when it is all said and done what was once a mountain will be a molehill in your rearview mirror). Hang in there, go back and restudy the material to master it (in case the material is the building block for future concepts), and treat yourself to a big chocolate chip cookie. 👍

You will have SO MANY exams throughout your four years that I promise you one midterm worth 25% of the course is like a drop in the bucket. DON'T WORRY, just prove to yourself that you can do well in that course and study like crazy for the rest of the exams.

To tell you a personal experience, when I was in 1st year I failed a midterm in integral calculus (worth 25% I think) and I felt as stressed as you were. But then I decided I would prove to myself that I could do well in that course and I studied like crazy for the other 75% and ended up with a final grade of 85 I think (with scaling of course). So don't sweat, even if you get say 50%, you've only lost 12-13% and you can still end up in the 80s of you put your mind to it.
