I attended Stony Brook University for 4 semesters and was suspended due to failure to remain in good academic standing, due to my own immaturity, left with a 1.7GPA. I went to community for a year with a part-time job left with a 3.2 GPA.I am now a Junior in my first semester at New Jersey Institute of Technology - where I am a Biochemistry major. I'll be graduating a year later than planned, 2012, but my goal is to maintain a GPA above 3.5

Aside from volunteering at the local hospital what should I do to better my chances; most research internships are for highly qualified/competitive students and my credentials do not show that.

Also, what are my chances??

I'm sorry but maintaining a 3.5 gpa from here on out is not going to cut it.
All of your credits will be averaged together, and that 1.7 gpa over 2 years kills you GPA.

lol. I just don't believe that this is a real post.

Consider retaking all the classes you did poorly in take advantage of the DO grade replacement policy. Only the retake will be counted in your application GPA provided the credit hours are the same or greater.

For now, I suggest you just concentrate on getting As. ECs can come later when you have solid study strategies.

Your chances cannot be determined yet in the absence of a demonstrated ability to consistently produce great grades in difficult classes.

I've considered retaking the courses I did poorly in but Stony Brook requires that you apply for re-instatement which is a lengthy process, and as a NJ resident the 20k fees would be killer. I'd like to avoid the Caribbean at all costs, is that my only option?

Also, this is a true situation - any advice would be useful.

You don't have to take them at Stony Brook. Take them at another institute.

Also, you need to figure out why you have done so poorly in school. Like I mentioned earlier a 3.5 from here on out will not cut it. The average excepted cGPA for a student is a 3.66.

hm apparently u havent gone to suny stony where pretty much 33% of their pop is like foreign or speak another language fluently. they study, alot, and work very hard. i know alot of people transfer here from another school and get shocked at how hard the science classes are. people with previous 4.0s tells me " oh man, ill be happy with just a B out of this bio lab class."

as to op, ur best shot is DO, they tend to take non trad people like your self. but u have to bring ur gpa to over 3.2 or so.
