I just found out today that i failed the step 2 ck by 1 point! I am so devastated. I dont know what i should do. If i failed by one point should i get a rescore? Will that look bad? I have my application almost complete in ERAS and now i dont know what i should do about this failing grade. Will this look bad on my application? I hope someone can help.

I'm sorry to hear that. I think the best thing for you to do would be to suck it up, study hard, and give it another shot as quickly as you can.

I've never heard of anybody getting even a one point compensation by rescoring.

I'm sorry, that's really unfortunate.🙁

Maybe you could talk to your dean/student affairs about what to do?
I am sure they have had students in the past in a similar situation during residency application/ERAS submission season.

For now I would start studying again - really hard.
Try to complete usmleworld q bank at LEAST once, read the answers to all the questions you get wrong ( and maybe the ones you guessed on but got right) and look at what subjects you are weak in and focus on those.

And don't get too down, if you got this far you can get through step 2 ck!
Good luck!!! :luck:

Dump all of the study guides. Do USMLE WORLD. I would go through once in tutor mode and do EVERY question in groups by topic. Read the answers to what you got both correct and incorrect and all of the answer choices. It's like reading a book but in a practical context. Then I would go through the questions a second time, perhaps randomized, but I'd still do it in tutor mode. If you work you butt off, you should be able to do this in 2-3 weeks. I would retest as soon as possible. There is no way to hide your step II score before you submit you applications. Just kick butt the second time.

I was in a similar situation in terms of having to improve on my Step I score...I know you are stressed.

If you decide to do that make sure you mark EVERY Q the first time round. Then on your 2nd time pick "marked" Qs to do then keep unmarking them as you go through them. This ensures no repeats the 2nd time around & more efficient studying.

i'm sorry to hear about the step 2 experience. =(

i think you would need to retake it asap. the next goal now is to have your scores in asap. then you can explain yourself on interviews and the new score will be factored in when you get ranked.

i know this isn't what you want to hear, but failing step 2 will adversely affect your app. i don't know how you did on step 1, but step 2 has been proven and shown to be a much predictor of success in residency. however, not all students take step 2 before applying, and though, step 1 is the only standardized national exam that can compare all applicants. since you took step 2 already, residencies will look at your step 2. step 1 usually is used as the cutoff for interviews, and so therefore, you will most likely get your interviews. and then the step 2 question will probably pop up at interviews. but to get rid of any doubt in anyone's mind, you shold schedule your next step 2 test date and let everyone know that you will take it agian.

obviously i will try to retake it asap, go through usmle world and such.
i did not mark "automatic" release of scores on in eras, so i guess it's up to me to update that, how do i go about that, i just go ahead and do it?
waht about the programs for which you have to pass the exam on first attempt, will they drop the interview???
and what sort of an answer can i generate for the PD and else during interviews in regards to my failling score.???

Greatly will appreciate any input....pretty pls

im so sorry. i know we all studied for this exam so much and dont understand how this could possibly happen, but hopefully this will pass and we will kick this test in the butt the second time around. I too used Kaplan and UW. i also read through Premier Review. I dont know how I will approach this differently this time as I am still confused as to where I went wrong. any thoughts out there?

hey..sorry about the exam. When i took it i was sure that i failed...but luckily things worked out.

I think you should stick with WORLD. make sure u read every explanation and understand it before you move on. This is key. Also try secrets..its a very good book, and will highlight the basic material that you need to know.

im sure ull do fine the next round! good luck:luck:

Yes i did a NMBE about 5 days b4 the test and i got a like a 214...those things never really predicted my score, but good practice anyway.

Hey all,

I too have failed the S2CK... I go to an offshore school and am currently doing my electives. I have applied to IM programs, many of which are sending me thanks but no thanks responses through ERAS. My s1 is a 193.

I've made the realization that I am the bottom of the barrell in terms of how I look on paper. So, I'm posting on here in hopes of finding some sort of guidance. I have come up with the following options:

1. Dig deep for greatness, study my tail off and pull out a passing score sometime around New years. and hope for the best in the scramble.

2. Finish medical school, take a Kaplan course or something of the sort and try to put up the best score I can and re-apply in 2010. But then I need to find something to do in the interim to better my App...

3. Take an emergency leave from school for personal reasons. Study hard for step 2 again... take it sometime in the spring, hopefully put up a good score, and schedule it so that I graduate in time for 2010 match.

I guess Im just looking for some help... I have no idea what to do. I'm the most miserable I've been in my entire life. I don't know who to turn to for advice, and I have no idea what would better my chances for getting a decent residency.
I guess at this point a surgical residency is out of the question and I'm left with FP or IM... all of which would be bottom tier programs. Any helo/advice is emensly appreciated.

Thanks.

I think right now you should be thinking proactively. Look at where your application is right now and decide on how to proceed:

Like how many places have you applied to and received interviews at? If you're interviewing at 10+ places, you stand a really really good shot at matching if your rank list is that long. Also the step 2 score is not released yet? So you can still take it again and have the score released once you have the second score on. Thus alleviating any fears for the residency programs.

I don't know how surgery is but for EM, step 2 isn't even asked about on the interview trail so I wouldn't stress about not passing this. It'll make your fourth year a little more hectic cuz now you'll have to study for it while you're doing your interviews. But it's all very doable. And keep in mind- you have the studying stuff all ready to go for the second time around- the questions have been done, the highlighting too. Now it's all fine tuning and working on filling in some gaps here and there.

My ticket for admission to this fiesta is I also failed... by 5pts... And since we are mopping about, I must say- DO NOT PAY FOR A REGRADE! I did and got nothing. I panicked and wanted (woeful wishing) to just pass on the first time, even though I had immediately signed up for a retry. Don't waste your time throwing good money after bad. I have heard time and time again, DO USMLE WORLD. PERIOD. but the good news is that we are sooo close, that the next time should put us over the top.

The cold hard facts are this: in medical school, only scores count. No matter what everyone says, no matter what everyone lectures about, only good scores matter. We have all seen ppl who don't show up, who don't treat ppl nice, who disappear on rounds, skip early, or torpedo your efforts to look good so they can suck up- yet they move thru the process like they are coated with teflon and baby oil. Only those who's efforts/scores are less than great need great manners. With the rest, the niceties are the whipped cream on the dessert.

The good news is that this stuff is both quantifable, understandable, and learnable!! So, best of luck, find a study partner, bust thru USMLE World, and see ya on the trail... You are not alone!
