I failed Step 2 CK. I plan on retaking it but scores won't be back until after ERAS is submitted. If I select to withhold scores, will programs be able to see it when they offer interviews? What should I do?

After I found out, I called the dean of my school and talked to him. I am currently on an away rotation for Emergency Medicine. I had another one scheduled but I think this will put me out of the race since I scored 209 on step 1 and planned on kicking ass on step 2...

I'm gonna switch to family medicine or internal medicine. I'm not sure yet.

I know why I failed. I didn't finish half the sections, guessing on 3-5 of the questions on each section. Anyway, I'm gonna take it again. Hopefully I'll score okay and it doesn't look ****ing terrible when they rank.

Relax!...I know this is a big deal now but you will match into EM if that's what you want. Just be honest and instead of focusing your efforts on hiding it...because it will come out and if they think you are being deceptive you will be blackballed......focus your efforts on being honest and telling them what you learned, how you grew and how you overcame this difficult moment in your journey. You will pass....still apply and just be forthcoming. It's like when your attending asks you "do they have a fever" and for whatever reason you forgot to check....just say "Sorry Dr. I didn't check i'll get that for you now." versus trying to hide it and look perfect...they will burn you at the stake and never confide in you again.

You have nothing to be ashamed of....only 1% of the world even gets to sit for this exam...keep your head up...you'll laugh of this over a glass of your favorite drink one day while you are a fully board certified Emergency Medicine physician.....mark my words on that one!

Thanks for your words of encouragement. I have already bought my plane ticket back and plan on studying hard and taking it again in a month. Unfortunately, I think I'll be applying to FM or IM. I'm not terribly bummed out. I always create a back up plan before going on any major life endeavors. Plan B has been activated.

EM has changed in the past few years and is now very competitive. I think OP's plan to try for IM or FM is appropriate in this case.

Naa.. life is too short...if need be go ahead and do a transitional/prelim year and apply again..you WILL get in...i'm at a pretty big LCME program now and our chief resident in EM failed his STEP 1....so anything is possible. Up to you in the end.

Not a problem, your not being a jerk. I was just mentioning that if you went to a school outside of US there probably is no chance for matching EM if you've failed CK. Granted there are always outliers that pull something like that off, but I'd say for majority of us it wouldn't happen. What do I base this off? A handful of American born IMG's I went to school with who had 230+'s on both steps who still couldn't match into EM. At the same time I don't want to crush your hopes and dreams if its what you really want to do. Just maybe you work your ass off at a program and they like you and would overlook it.
