This is absolutely ridiculous advice. No offense, but you are a foreign grad, so your experiences don't really apply for the most part unless "Bob" is a foreign grad.

Pretty sure QofQuimica went to the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, a top ten US medical school.
 
What surgical specialty was Bob gunning for? Might be helpful to gauge his overall competitiveness.

There's also a lot of family medicine dissing in this thread. FM is actually a pretty versatile gig. You can do pretty much anything you want (outpatient clinic, sports medicine, hospitalist, urgent care, health policy, teach med school), and there are a ton of procedures for the procedural-minded. Many stellar medical students from top US medical schools go into family medicine every year.
