Hello,

I was wondering if I still had a chance of getting into Medical School after failing 2 of my gen chem classes with D's. I retook both and ended up with a B in one and an A in the other. I passed the last gen chem class with an A, no retaking. I got a B+ and 2 A's in general Bio. Currently took 2/3 ochem classes and received A's in both. Even though the two classes I failed are not included in my gpa, do I still have a chance at med school after failing those two gen chem classes?

You seem to be doing OK if you retook them and did well; plus you did great in orgo and your other sciences. Keep up the good work.

Those D's will be calculated into your GPA though for AMCAS, even if they are not calculated into your GPA for your university.

Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback.

If my AMCAS gpa is significantly lower than my regular science gpa as a result, will this ruin my chances of getting into Med School?

Depends what the number is.

Keep the upward trend going and the worst thing that will happen is that you have to answer the question at interviews: "So what was up with those D's?"

After calculating my gpa with science and math currently and the AMCAS gpa it is a 3.768 vs a 3.3359

I'm a bit confused.

So your sGPA is 3.34 if you count the 2 D's? And it is 3.77 if you don't count the 2 D's?

I think based on wording, the first is his "current," as in institutional GPA, and the second is his AMCAS.

Yes exactly.

Well, for matters of med school application, the 3.34 is your real sGPA. This is low, but not lethal. You should still improve it with some more classes - try to get it to 3.5+.

Also depends on where you go to school. My school posts ~75% first-time MD acceptance rate for sGPA>3.0

I'd imagine that at a low tier school 3.0 sGPA would be lethal.

But obviously, those grades are going to hurt. 3.34 with B's throughout and 3.34 w/ 2 D's in pre-reqs are completely different stories.
