For what I have seen, at uhco failing an important class automatically sets you back a whole year. For example, if you fail optics I, you need to retake it the following fall semester, but since Optics I is a pre-req for other classes, your schedule gets pushed back enough so that you don’t graduate in 4 years. There’s no way of retaking a class during the summer. That seems pretty harsh to me.

How do other schools handle students that fail a class in OD school?

A couple people in my class failed neuroanatomy (i think) and just took it the next year. They're still on schedule to graduate with everyone else.

I think that feeling is pretty universal. I don't know of anyone who actually enjoyed it (although the same could be said for most classes 🙂

At SCO if you make an F you are sent before a committee and they decide your fate. You can either continue on with your class and meet with that teacher one-on-one to remediate and are given 2 tests or get kicked out of school. If you are kicked out, you have a good chance of being let into the class below if there are spaces (not 125 students still in that class). If there are not spaces (as was the case last year for two people in the class above mine) you might have to start all the way back over. The decision seems to depend on how you were doing in other classes and how you've done in school up to that point.

Yikes! That sounds a little scary...

See at umsl I loved Neuroanatomy because our instructor was great. He made it enjoyable and also taught Ocular Optics. Also I loved the fact that I didn't have to buy books for either one (just the neuro lab picture book).

What is the profile of the students that fail? Bad study habits? Party too much? Weak undergrad education?

I'm not sure there is one thing that they all have in common. Perhaps not getting help early enough in the class when they were having trouble.

At Berkeley it depends on the class and on how well you did in your other classes. FYI a D will put you in this predicament. Each case is reviewed and administration decides the best course of action. Most of the time you are asked to join the class below you (giving you a chance to improve your performance). About 1-3 students per year are put on the 5 year plan.
The worst thing (besides losing a year and $20k) is the stigma attached. People assume that you can't cut the academics or that you partied too hard etc, etc. when really no one knows how hard someone's life is until they walk a mile in their moccasins.

when i was at SCO we had a large amount of attrition, most of them were kicked out, with a few of them getting in the classes below us, some of them ousted for good. oddly, some of them (only a couple) were allowed to continue on and just retake the class. in my opinion, we lost some potentially good ODs, and some people who didnt fail out should have. if my memory serves me, more than 30 people failed a class at some point in their 4 year run, and they kicked out 17 people (some of which were just set back).

A D will do this to you at UHCO first year too. But, it depends on the class. If it's a prereq class then you can't get D's either.

And yes, UHCO is harsh about it. But, they have to draw the line somewhere.

It's just laziness...

How can you say that??? YOu have no idea what people are going through; a girl in my class at scco failed out cause she is a single mom... I really doubt she was lazy; she just had a lot of other things going on at the time and maybe couldnt handle it all
at scco if you fail certain classes you can just remediate them with the teacher one-on -one the next quarter. if you fail a couple of classes they usually make you come back the next year and take those classes again; usually i think you dont have to take all the classes again; just the ones you fail.

in terms of what causes them to fail? hopefully the schools do a good enough job of picking people who have the potential to succeed; so i would say its a variety of things; it COULD be laziness, or it could be issues that we know nothing about; such as dealing with family issues or being sick and getting behind or just about anything.
