I think it would only be beneficial if you actually use your license to have patient contact.

I performed well in the written portion of my EMS class and had panic attack during the practical/exceeded the limit for completing practical stations. Passing the practicals is pre-requisite for passing this course, so I earned a fail on a pass/fail grading scale.

I'm committed to working on managing the anxiety.

For context, I've taken no natural science courses, and my background's nearly exclusively in the humanities and social sciences.

How significantly might this compromise my admission odds (DO or MD)? What are people's thoughts regarding how safely I could candidly address the issue in personal statements?

I'm drawn psychiatry/neuro/internal medicine.
Post undergrad, I'm considering applying to post-bac programs for "career changers."
What are people's thoughts concerning whether I'd benefit, from a med school admissions standpoint, from re-taking the course (assuming I can temper my angst)? Thanks all,

Assuming that your state administers the standard NREMT practical exam, you should be able to retest your practical without having to do any remediation with your instructor. Which stations did you fail- medical, trauma, skills?

Regardless of how intelligent/educated you are, EMS practicals can be stressful. You have to practice. Remember that they're never going to throw any difficult cases at an EMT student.

And as a side note, simply having an EMT certification means nothing on your med school application. It's a class written at a 10th grade reading level. You have to use the certification for it to mean anything. If your anxiety is as severe as your post makes it seem, I'm not sure EMS is the right field for you to pursue.

PM me if you have any questions- I put in many moons as a medic and EMS instructor before med school.

Keep in mind that medical school is a furnace and I've seen it break even healthy students.

And you haven't taken Orgo or Physics yet???? How will you fare on the MCAT? Boards?????

Pretty much everyone in my EMT class failed the practical on the first go around since there are so many tiny automatic fail mistakes you can make at any given station (I personally made a really boneheaded mistake that rhymes with scene safety). We all got to retake the psychomotor exam and all passed on the second go around.

I withdrew from the emt course towards the end because I went broke and had a child to support I ended up having to get a full time job and the emt course takes up 8 hours during the day. I'm not sweating it though as long as there is reason I can't see them killing your app for it.
