Failing out of Dental School

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Failing out of dental school, potentially failing 2 basic science coarses, what should I do? Please help ASAP! Thanks:xf:

Don't fail the retake course/exam(s). Be proactive, meet with the profs/admin and LIST what you're doing to change.

Honestly I would pack my bags and get ready to move back home. It sounds like you can't cut it in Dental school and don't have the scholastic aptitude. Just being honest so you don't waste any more time chasing a pipe dream.

btw, it's courses, not coarses. you really are a failure aren't you?

Talk to your professors and your dean of student services if they're easy to talk to. I know what you're going through, I was really having real trouble adjusting first semester because I was a total crammer in undergrad, got a few C's, and since C's get you kicked out, I really had to get my ass in gear for second semester, and I ended up doing much better. The key is time management - start studying for a test at least a week before, just go to the library, put some headphones on, and go over the material. For Head and neck, draw EVERYTHING out - after 3 or 4 times, you can memorize each trigeminal pathway pretty easily. For gross, just sit there and relate things to positions in your own body, use mnemonic devices. Most of all, don't get paralyzed by the stress, that's the worst thing you can do.

You got this far, don't give up!

ADDMD,

Don't give up no matter what. Think of how hard it was to even get accepted to motivate yourself. Anatomy isn't that hard, just a lot of content and detail that needs time to internalize, if you revise loads you should be fine. If you're feeling lonely hit up your classmates and do some hardcore anatomy flag race revisions or something.

If you are like people at my school you can get angry, call names, and have temper tantrums.

Some background, Im failing due to some personal reasons. Stress and anxiety and emotional issues were going on- fear of failing and not being able to succeed.🙁 Didn't think D-school was going to be this difficult, I've just never been away from home on my own, and thrown into such an intense program, and just trying to cope and handle it all. I passed the first term, then the anatomy term is where Im having difficulties. And chubby babby fyi failing with a 68 percent so it's not that Im a total failure lol..
We are all going through the same thing with dental school being tough. In fact, I was in a somewhat similar situation with anatomy, and there was some brief tutoring available through the anatomy department. Just start spending a little more time going over anatomy every day, and gradually do more and more until the exam. Get off SDN and keep studying until you can't anymore, then study more. 🙂

Wow, why so pessimistic? You don't know why this person had problems with school so you have no right to judge them. There's a reason why the OP was chosen to attend dental school in the first place so I'm sure that they can do it...everyone makes mistakes, no one's perfect.

OP, don't listen to this person. If you really want to be a dentist, keep at it. 🙂

I'd echo the response of others on this thread by talking to the dean and your faculty about your personal issues and fears. most schools have a system to combat such issues. We had a guy in our class who was having some personal issues, he was doing well up until that time, the school granted him leave for 1 yr with conditional return the next yr that he goes through some kind of school assessment. I'm sure there are ways to tackle this before thinking you're done with dentistry, unless you absolutely hate it and dont want to do it for the rest of your life, i would not recommend giving up just yet.

Good luck

Why is everyone being so up in the clouds. If this person cant cut it due to anxiety/fear or whatever, what makes you think they can make it IF they were to eventually graduate? Yeah they made it into school but admission mistakes are always made. That is why there is the option of being kicked out to make up for that mistake. I would honestly not want this person to waste any more money on something they obviously are not cut out to complete. It is just more money to pay back when they get booted with a job that won't come near paying enough to pay back the growing amount of debt. Just quit before you get deep in debt buddy.

No clouds here.....but tell me of one dental student who have not gone through the anxiety and fear of class and lab work, i've had instructors tell me after re-doing a stupid lab exercise over and over that may be i'm not cut to do this in real life, sure i can remember and laugh it out now, but i was scared as hell back then. what got me through is having people around me that really cared and continued to push and encourage till i made it through. Nothing special, i think we all been through it and i think it comes as part of the training. But I think it does not serve him any good by telling him that he wont make it through because he is too anxious or scared.

In my opinion, the hardest is to get to dental school, the rest is all possible. No one is cut for dentistry, any person is capable to learn, it is not some kind of magic. And working is fun.

Is it really that obvious that this person isn't cut out for dentistry? Everyone goes through a slump at least once in their lives. OP, find the help you need and you can get through it. :]

What is chubby babby?

Pretty much need to just do the work needed to survive. Work harder, work longer, work smarter, study partners, faculty office hours, talk to upper level students to see how they pulled through. You already know what you need to do if you've gotten this far. You just need to do more of it.
