Fair pay?

and you think that’s right?

i do not.

and the fact it happens is a reflection of our society at large. our priorities.

People have been cheering on athletes since modern civilization. The colloseum was built to showcase gladiators not white collar workers.

Is the amount of money certain athletes get paid pretty egregious? Sure.

But it's such a small subset of ultra elite athletes that I have a hard time getting worked up about it. The average NFL player washes out after 3 years and that's it for their professional career basically.

Yes. I can imagine it and I would say it with a straight face. The amount of stress and unnecessary drama that occurs during that decade of your 20's more then justifies the example you provided.
ONLY docs got thru "stress and unnecessary drama" in their 20s. My guess is other people would tell us "welcome to life".

Did you have a job prior to getting into med school?

I was working when I was 15 hauling bales of water logged peat moss off tractor trailers at a farmer's market. I wasn't born with a silver spoon up my ass like you, clown.

Would you also do that for the team owners who are making a lot more than these athletes?

that’s american sport for you with “team owners”. before it used to be athletes playing countries and pride - now it’s just about $$$$$

honestly very nauseating that’s why i don’t watch it anymore. i can’t get a sense of loyalty in athletes. trading players like cards - that’s not sport.

the whole purpose of sport is that no matter your background, color, race, creed, wealth - the physical ability on the ground is an equalizer. it’s supposed to be an even contest.

i can’t stand watching teams like nyy (or boston or which ever rich team) with ridiculous budgets to buy out the cream of available talent and then dominate…that’s not sport anymore

honest question. Did you even play sports growing up? Even at young age?

This anti sports professional stance seems odd to me. Players leaving teams is good! NFL free agency was not a true free agency till 30 years ago with Reggie white being the first true mega superstar free agent to switch teams for big money. Players these days get traded for many reasons. Money or teams knowing they will leave the team so better to get another player back in return than get nothing in return. (Like Luka Dallas trade)

Yea. Major League Baseball has a huge problem still even with penalties for being over a certain payroll these days.

NFL has a hard salary cap. NBA has a soft salary cap (with penalties being over a certain apron).

If you are arguing budgets. Healthcare budgets are just as ridiculous in our world. 90% of weekend and night cases. Yet you don’t have any issues with healthcare budgets? But have issues with sports budgets??

i played quite a few sports actually.
soccer, tennis, squash, badminton, cricket, ping pong, swimming.

healthcare is a necessity, sports are a recreational
activity and clearly not a necessity. esp the way they’re done in our economy.

you’re asking me a question about priorities. what i think isn’t important. what our legislators and society values is important.

cost of healthcare is high not because of physicians. it’s high because we don’t have universal healthcare - among other factors - so utilization is high for acute situations and costs 8-10x

and i don’t get started on community health and prevention and food prices compared to other western nations. when $/lb broccoli is more than mcdonald’s value meal you know what kind of population you’ll get

Correct. My point. We have a lot of waste in this country.

You say sports pays too much.

But the amount of resources we waste are 10x more on healthcare than people overspend on sports.

In other words, "stop liking what I don't Iike" ...

🙂

Seems like you know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Art in all its forms - literature, film, music, paintings, and yes, sport - are what make the human experience tolerable and meaningful.

I'm glad to live in a world in which art is valued, and at least some of the artists well paid. A tiny, tiny fraction of the very best of them earn $millions and I'm glad they do.

put a cap on athlete income at 2 mil

reduce gate prices

You want to cap athletes' salaries and event ticket prices? GTFO.

Yeah yeah yeah, growing food is "more important" but the whole reason civilization exists in the first place is because thousands of years ago humanity developed agriculture and the reliable calorie surplus permitted individuals to specialize into things outside of subsistence level survival. The quantity and quality of art, along with other advancements, exploded.

Maybe you'd like to live in a place where the buildings are all squat gray concrete and talented people aren't allowed to sell their labor for what others willing pay. There are places like that, you know.

Speaking of sports. The lakers are getting sold for a crazy 10 billion dollars.

So someone values it.
And the dude owns the dodgers and brought Andretti auto group and forced his way into formula one when Michael Andretti’s effort failed last year.

I’m a big formula one fan also.

Well.

There is value to entertainment for societal health and well being. A well functioning society needs and benefits from cultural entertainment, art, music, etc.

Hard to quantify the monetary value of those benefits, so comparing them to something else is challenging

Some interesting charts about the Broadway theater audience.
