It's only the second week of psychiatry, and my mind is begging me for a vacation! How can I fall for this subject? Anyone here who LOVES psychi? Coz I don't know how to like it.

Half the time you pity them, and half the time you try not to laugh at them. Other times you are just so absorbed with their delusions that you forgot to note it down. No wonder The Matrix is so believable! I just found out a day ago that's how they got the idea. Imagine...copyright all the stories they give you and sell it to Hollywood!

Or maybe I'm a bit cranky when reading thru the topics that it crosses my mind...ooh..that's sounds like me...a bit here...and small patch of that...but no I don't have this...ark! I don't have that do I??...this is scary!

How am i going to go through this 8 weeks posting? In the end, even if I just have to go thru with it, how am I gonna to get the history in such a limited time in xm?

Yeah, that's psych allright. It's depressing as hell. But don't sweat it. It's real easy to get wrapped up in the stories you're hearing every day. They're pretty horrific. Yes, that's the darker side of life. Generally in life it's taboo to bring it up precisely because it's so depressing. Asking those personal questions to miserable people is like lancing a boil. All sorts of awfull crap comes out. If you want to go into psych then, by all means dive right in.

But if, like me, your path leads elsewhere then here is what I'll tell you. Psych may be for slackers but the shelf exam at the end of your rotation is definately not. If you want to do well on it start studying hard right now. Use your time with patients to practice NOT being overly personal with them and NOT being too drawn in by them. That's as much a skill as it's opposite. Don't be too open with your attendings and residents. Many seem "nice" but are total fu<kers. Behave as a model student at all times. You don't want those guys thinking about you too much. They make mountains out of every molehill they find. And forget about what applies or doesn't apply to you. Pretty much everyone in medicine is a little nuts. Those in psych are warped and the patients are actually broken. There's really no comparison.

Psych docs like to make a deal out of how it's a thinking discipline and how intellectual it all is. Well it's not. It's mostly a bunch of *****s putting people in boxes according to an ICD9 code book. Learn your DSM, know the drugs and do lots of questons and you'll be fine. You might also want to take care to connect with something you like a lot like a hobby or sport to keep your spirits up. Good luck. 🙂 :luck:
