Ok, since I got some responses to the Arkansas question, here is a new one. I am married, doing my undergrad. Am I alone in this, or are there other married folks out there? Particularly in undergrad.
P.S. Don't you just love this TV show Scrubs?

Married, one child. I am an undergrad, applying for the class of 2006. It is all about balance.

Ditto. Married, one child, and still in undergrad. 2006 hopeful (first interview next thursday).

Any advice? My wife is pregnant, so we soon will really have a family. I work nights 3 days a week to help us save, and it is rough. How did you balance everything effectively?

I'm married and just found out that I have one on the way...who will be born just before I *hopefully* will be in med school. EEK! It's scary, but exciting!

Congratulations to jiffy boy especially and to all of you!!!

am not married btw

Congrats to all you soon-to-be parents and those that are already. I don't have any advice to give (still single), but wondering: are you guys all "traditional" undergrads- by that i mean younger than 22 years old, or are you all older, perhaps back-to-school folks? Either way, i'm duly impressed by you all! Thanks! --Trek

I guess I'm not exactly a traditional student (I'll be 25 when I enter med school). I took two years off of school to be a missionary in Guatemala for my church, so that's why I'm a little older.

Married, undergrad, hoping to have a lil pooper by next year. Not even close to traditional. In fact, I am the embodiment of non-traditional. I am the anti-traditionalist. I am its antithesis. Hehehe. 😀

I'm an undergraduate with still a little over two years to go. I'm married and have three children. The road to med school is difficult, but not impossible. Just a lot of discipline and family support.

I'm 20, on the young side of things I guess. Single and hoping to go straight in following this, my senior year.

Married with three children. 31 years old. Started undergrad age 27. In my last quarter of undergrad now.(Alleleuia!) Two med school interviews (allo) so far. Life is good 😀

I'm married, 8 months pregnant and applying for next year. I spent the day visiting UNC yesterday and everyone (students and staff) seemed very supportive. I even met with the dean of admissions who did not seem one bit perturbed with my jutting belly and duck waddle. There are other young parents there as well, although not as many as you would find at a place like Case with other students, but I did meet a couple of your women in the first year class who were mothers as well.

BTW, I'm 26, and my wonderful husband is 36. So I guess I'm non-trad.

I'm a 31-year-old female with an 18-month old son. I had hoped to have another before I start med school, but that's not working out very well.

Anyway, I finished my undergrad in 1992 but I've been taking classes at night while working full time. It's not fun, but do-able. I'm applying/interviewing right now.

Personally, I think we students with families have an advantage. Since our marriages already have a strong base, we will be a lot more likely for our marriages to survive med school/residency. Almost everyone has to make the decision about marriage/family at some point before they are done, so that's one less thing for us to worry about!

Good luck to everyone!

Thanks everyone for the responses. This has been something that has been worrying me lately, and it helps to know that there are others who are doing it. I am a traditional (although I did take a year off for medical mission work after high school) and I plan to graduate on time, which means 2004. Makes me feel young. I am 20. By the way, my little pooper is due April 12. And good luck to those others that are expecting. Its a rough ride, but hey, look at the benefits! And I know the full time day work and night school is tough. I am full time night work and full time school days. It SUCKS. But I work 3 nights (7p-7a) a week so that I get to see my wife more and get some sleep too! Anyways, thanks for the responses, it really does ease my mind. My wife has been worried for me too since she knows it is a dream of mine. Our pregnancy (hers, I guess since I am not the pregnant one 😉 ) was unplanned, so she has felt guilty, thinking I would not be able to attain my dream because of her. Thats not true, and I cannot wait to be a father! So thanks for letting me tell her good news!

married, 2 kids, nontrad undergrad. family support is VERY important. med school + family: it won't be the easiest feat, but it will be accomplished!

Wow! Beachedwhale I'm in exactly the same situation as you! 🙂 I'm 8 months pg and applying for next year also. UNC is one of the schools I applied to too, but I don't know what my chances are there since I'm a native but not a resident currently. You'll have to let me know when you pop! I've been going through pre-term labor myself, so I'm halfway expecting our munchkin at any time now. 🙂 Best wishes to you!!

The whole 'havin-a-baby' thing doesn't worry me with *this* one...it's the next one I'm worried about. I am definately nono-trad (I'll be 33 this Christmas), and my hubby and I would love to have one more child, I just don't know how it will work out. I'm sure it will work out *somehow*, but it's still scary. 😱

Congrats on the expectant daddy status Dustin! 😀 Be careful not to worry/work yourself to death now...make sure you take some time out to smell the roses and feel the kicks. 😀 I have to agree with nochaser...having a supporting family is the most important thing. If I didn't have my hubby's full support in this I don't know what I'd do. It's going to be hard, but I truly believe we can make it work for us.

Congrats to everyone on their determination. With caring families at home I am sure we'll have the support most med students don't. Best wishes!

Oh! I almost forgot. I just taped my first episode of Scrubs last night Dustin...I intend to watch it sometime today. I'm really looking forward to this...I forgot about the pilot episode, and didn't know they were putting the second one on a different day, so I missed that one too. 😡

Hopefully now I won't miss any more. 🙂
