For the "any additional info" prompt, different people have advised me to write about my family's background. How should one go about writing a good "family background" essay though? I mean I feel I have a semi-interesting story to tell, but if I'm not an actor in the narrative why would an adcom want to hear about it? Can it really contribute positively to my application? Should I extend family background to include my childhood/upbringing? (I lived in an urban, predominantly Hispanic area until I was 13 - not disadvantaged in the slightest so that's not the angle I'd be using)

i used a similar idea....

but you have to be involved and you have to somehow relate it back to why that makes you a better candidate...

i.e. if growing up in that neighborhood taught you lessons or values which have had some large impact on your life

edit: If the story has nothing to do with you but just your family, Im not sure the adcoms want to hear about it.

It's a tough one. I have to write an autobiography, but I don't want to do the typical boring "I was born in ___ and grew up ___"
