What are some other national Family Med conferences besides the annual AAFP conference?

Thanks

It depends on whether you are a DO or MD.

If you are an MD, there is the annual Resident/Student national conference in Kansas City, MO, in July. There is also the AAFP Scientific Assembly in September, which is phenomenal.

If you are an MD, you can attend the two above plus the OMED conference, which is non-FM specific. There is also the ACOFP conference every March.

Those are the ones I know about.

I think DOs can go to the Resident/Student one as well. Anyone been to it? I am considering it but it would be at not such a great time of year and would be an expense....thoughts?

This year will be my 5th National Conference and though I may be partial, it is worth every penny to attend. Right now there are many scholarship opportunities through the AAFP ($600 scholarships - click here) as well as through many state chapters (ie Pennsylvania gives out $599 scholarships to over 40 students every year). That can go a long way (especially when splitting a hotel room with 3-4 other people!). It has the largest residency fair in the country (out of any family medicine conference and out of any specialty conference). You have the opportunity to visit programs all across the country, to speak with program directors and residents within the programs about their experiences.

And that is just the residency fair - there are multiple workshops that discuss the application process, interviewing techniques as well as clinical skills and procedure workshops. There are also sessions on how to advocate from the grassroots level as well as within the AAFP itself at the resident and student Congresses. It is definitely at a great time of the year as new 4th years are beginning the application process, gathering letters, and choosing which programs to apply to. My first conference was between 1st and 2nd year. I was really glad that I attended it at that point because there are so many other things to do besides the residency fair that really teach you about the specialty and get you excited about all the opportunities the specialty provides that most med schools do a poor job in showcasing by themselves IMO.

It is also a great conference for residents who are looking to meet with recruiters, learn about different practice environments, as well as the other opportunities at the workshops described above.

I'm the only girl from my med school going to the AAFP conference and am looking for some roommates. If you don't have a hotel reservation yet, hit me up.

Hi I am looking for a roommate. I am a male MPH student from Houston Texas. I have reserved in a hotel which is far away from the Bartle Conf hall. I would like to stay closer to Hall. But those are expensive though. Please let me know. thanks
