Hello everyone

I am studying in an offshore medical school at the moment. Ideally, the dream would be to attain an emergency medicine residency, but I acknowledge the fact that I am an IMG and there is a very high likelihood of only matching into family medicine or IM. I have heard brief discussion on matching into family residency (2 yrs), then doing an additional 1yr training for EM, then you are able to work both if you wish.

I've searched around but cannot find any information on the requirements/proper path to take for this, so I was hoping someone here can direct me if possible.

Specifically, I would like to know if:

Is it a special residency program you must apply for that combines Family/EM? Or can I apply to family, then go for the EM after?

If I do start with family and wish to train for EM, what is the application process like? Can just anyone enter training for it? Or is there an exam/aptitude test? Heavy competition? etc etc

Any answers, or a nudge in the direction to find it myself (short of a google search), would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

There are dual fm/em programs (5yrs)... there is a newer EM fellowship (1 yr)that FM docs can take after their residency (3yrs) but that 1yr em fellowship is with a different licensing board and you aren't eligible for the same boards as a doc that does the Dual fm/em or the full em (3yrs)

some hospitals will hire non-em-boarded docs in the emergency dept, most the ones in larger cities won't

all residencies and fellowships have application processes

Thank you for the advice. Would you have any idea (or be able to point me in the direction of a resource) about the competitiveness of the dual fm/em programs?

And just as an aside....Can you recommend any good resources to read more about Canadian residencies/requirements/general information?
I just cant seem to find much online myself :S
