you shouldn't base the rest of your life only on your income. you better enjoy what you do or it's gonna make for some LOOOONNNGGG days.
Very true, but is it really all about the money? If you find a specialty that pays a lot of money and that you really enjoy, then congratulations. But if you go to a specialty that pays a lot of money and you don't really enjoy, you'll be miserable.
Trust me, I was in a career with great hours that paid a lot of money. I was miserable. Now I'm very happy in Family Medicine, which is what I've always wanted to do. Every morning I wake up with a smile on my face, especially if I'm going to the clinic all day to see my patients.
By the way...physicians do enter this forum. It's just that most of the time we lurk. 😉
Depends. Concierge Doctors make a ridiculous amount of money, and in many cases more than any specialist. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure they are considered "family medicine".
FP has some perks i.e. different PTs, presentations, caring across the lifespan, but it suffers from little respect, poor pay, long hours and a frustrating reimbursement situation. IM may be a better choice as a PCP and it allows for more specialization, if you decide you don't enjoy being a PCP.
That is one thing to consider. Realize that a lot about family medicine is going to change in the next few years, and while there are a lot of predictions out there, I don't htink there's any way of really knowing the state of things after these initial healthcare reforms.
My one assumption is that the reforems will make everything worse so, I plan to apply to the NSU-COM DO/DMD, hopefully dental remains untouched and cosmetic derm, ophtho-plastics, ENT, plastics when I go into the match assuming I nail the COMLEX. BTW I'm a BS/DO student.
They're already setting their sights on that one.

But really, at this point it's hard to predict what will go down seeing as for the moment pretty much everything is still on the table.
Popular specialties change and it seems with the coming reform the family practice physicians will be paid more.
By the time you start practicing the highest paying specialties can be very different.

EVERYONE is getting the shaft. its just that the family med docs don't have as much to lose as the rest.

Concierge medicine is a tiny niche and even though some FPs may do it, I know I would prefer an IM trained physician out of a top tier residency program if I were to shell out the 1,000+ retainer. I don't think that at this point is representative of what most FPs are doing. FP has two issues right now, poor pay and encroachment from allied health i.e. NP, PA, APRN. Until those are fixed I'd stick to specialties.
