Yeah, you all are right... I guess Im being too harsh. I certainly didnt factor in that name changes were common at the time. I just thought if people like Vivien Thomas and Helen Taussig can make it... its a cheap cop out.... you get the idea....

me and my idealism. 🙄

The trouble is that Vivien Thomas DIDN'T make it in certain terms. His accomplishments were not validated by Blalock or Taussig; had he been a white man, I'm sure the situation would have been vastly different.

If you haven't seen the HBO film about them, I highly recommend it.

Its clear that Blalock respected Thomas and went against his colleagues who questioned his professional judgement in hiring him, but outside of the lab, he socially distanced himself from Thomas and made no effort to help him achieve the education he so clearly wanted. I think Hopkins gave him an honorary doctorate at the end of his career.

Interestingly, I believe Thomas's nephew became an Orthopedic Surgeon for a professional sports team.

Something the Lord Made is probably the only film I've seen that comes close to accurately depicting how science is really done. It's quite a movie and I second the recommendation.
