Hey everyone, I'm fairly new to the SDN. I just moved from Cincinnati, after 3 years there, to Tallahassee after getting put on UC's alternate list (and PBA). Im transferring to one of the schools in Tallahassee to finish my undergraduate and then start applying again. I heard FAMU discriminates heavily against transfer students, so I was wondering what the people on this forum thought. Do you think I should take my undergraduate courses at FAMU or FSU? Mind you FAMU is having some problems with SACS and their accreditation.

i would say finish them at FSU. Since they(FAMU) have a 0+6 program, they will rarely ever accept transfer students. I may be a bit biased, as the rejected me (transfer and non-African American. I had no shot.). And why would you want to finish your undergrad at a school who has problems with accreditation? The only reason to attend FAMU for undergrad is to have a better shot at their pharm program, which might do you no good upon graduation. Go to FSU, finish it up, apply to PBA, LECOM, UF, NSU.

Thats what I was thinking, FSU seems like the better choice but if FAMU favors their undergrads, do you think they would favor me over others transferring to their pharmacy college, even though I'm a transfer undergrad? Any reason you suggested LECOM? Thats definitely a far ways away from Florida. I haven't actually looked into LECOM. I am originally from the Cleveland area, so I'm somewhat familiar with Erie. Is LECOM accredited now? What is the overall average GPA/PCAT of the students they are admitting?

Not sure if you are aware of this, but there is another LECOM campus in Bradenton that is accredited...along with the Erie campus.

Well first FAMU is 0+6 so you wouldn't be able to join their pre-pharm students so when you go apply you'll be like the rest of us and they really don't take that many trust me. I've heard they turn down 3.7 and 3.9 all the time. As far as LECOM goes they have a campus in Brandenton that starts their first class this fall and there accreditation is through their Erie campus. They are fairly new so the GPA and PCAT im sure are pretty mids. So i would agree do undergrad at FSU and apply to UF, NSU, LECOM, PBA.

GO GATORS!!!!

After you mentioned LECOM, I went and saw that they have a branch in Florida. Thanks for the advice, I will definitely look into LECOM for next year.

just a side note...non-african americans actually have a better shot at getting in...i know several that actually got in on minority scholarships because, well...they were the minority at FAMU...lol

to the OP,
i could be biased (since i attended FSU..hehe) but i say finish up your pre-reqs either at FSU or at Tallahassee Community College...mainly because of FAMU's accreditation probs..good luck!!!

I actually attended FAMU and they do not bias against non-African American students. There were at many different races that were ienrolled in their pharmacy program. Also, they do accept mainly their pre-pharmacy students. I only know of two people who were tranfers into the program during my three years at FAMU. Also, their department is going through a lot of changes and I would suggest doing more research on their accreditation staus.

thats the one i meant. oops! all of those listed are in florida.

I applied to FAMU for Fall 2006 and wasn't accepted. They are biased against students with bachelors degrees and people who did not start there right out of high school. But who knows, with all those accreditation problems they might be desperate for students! As others have said I would go to FSU or TCC to finish up your classes so you can apply to other schools. The FAMU application fee is only $25 or so, so it wouldn't be a huge burden to apply there, however I wouldn't let that be the only place you apply to. Good luck.

Hey I actually go to FAMU and they do not discriminate against non blacks. The pharmacy school has a good mix of races. But it is a 6 year program school so you have to realize that they're going to accept a lot less number of transfers than non 6 year school not because they discriminate against people with bacehlors like someone on here said. They are on probation due to mostly interim dean and faculty problems too many shift arounds and politics. So I wouldn't just apply to FAMU I'm applying to other school as well even though technically I'm in. But good luck I hope you get accepted somewhere. 🙂
