Fantasy Baseball - A good way to pass time on waitlists

I didn't think I would be doing fantasy baseball this year, but with the start of the baseball season, I simply cannot resist the urge.

I have started up a Yahoo league - 12 team roto league, automatic draft. If not 12 teams, then 10 or 11 teams would be ok.

The roto categories used will be:

Hitting: runs, home runs, rbi, sbs, avg
Pitching: wins, saves, strikeouts, era, whip

damn...id join but i already have 4 baseball teams in yahoo and one basketball....and ive hit my limit. they wont allow more than 4 teams in one sport.

5 teams! For me, managing one team alone means spending countless hours in the evenings doing research on fantasy players... 5 teams must be REAL time consuming!

Anyhow, we need at least 4 more people to have a good league size!!!

I'd love to play fantasy baseball if the statistics that correlated best with run production(obp%, slg%, DIPS, etc) and winning were actually used instead of mediot statistics(batting average, rbis, stolen bases).

I know that's why it's called 'fantasy' baseball, but still, evaluating a player based on total # of rbi's and stolen bases is like evaluating a medical school applicant based on how many premed organizations they are in.

You are correct on this point - OBP, SLG, OPS, etc.. all correlate better with run scoring than AVG or SBs.

However a lot of these statistics correlate well with each other - for example, you are much more likely to score a lot of runs if you have a high OBP. Generally speaking the hitters who are good fantasy baseball players also have high OBP, SLG, OPS, etc.. For example, even if I created a fantasy league that emphasized OPS, the draft list of the top players probably wouldn't change that much. Players like Pujols, Bonds, A-Rod, etc... would still be on the top of everyone's draft list.

The one drawback is that SBs are somewhat overemphasized in traditional roto leagues. One dimensional players who steal bases and do practically nothing else are valued commodities in fantasy baseball. This usually doesn't change that much in a fantasy league though, because sbs are only one category.

On the pitching side, ERA and WHIP are excellent barometers of pitching ability.

So in sum, fantasy baseball reasonably approximates real baseball and more importantly, it is fun!

As soon as we get at least 10 teams, then I will initiate the draft process. The draft will occur 72 hours after I initiate the draft process. I am hoping that the draft will occur this weekend so that we will miss only one week of the season.

The draft is an automatic draft in which participants rank players before the draft.

So for all those people participating, fill out your draft rankings!

There are 11 teams in our league right now so I changed the draft status to "Ready"...
