Just thought Id share a lovely surprise that came up as I had planned for applying for MSP and Fellowship.

I did a 3 year residency for a 4 year payback, N+1 just like it says on every piece of advertising you see for the program. When i was checking out my vMPF my obligation was coded as 4.5 years from start. Looked up my contract to verify, yep 3.0 years of scholarship for 4.0 years. Figured it would be an easy fix and called AFPC.

My contract specifically said 4.0 years for 3.0 scholarship, signed up and down, initialled 5000 times. Well apparently since my residency had an intro week for in processing they coded my start date a week early. Which makes 3.02 years of residency. Elsewhere in the contract it says anything over an even year gets rounded up to the next 6 months. So 4.5 years.

But it gets better. I said i only signed up for 3 years of scholarship. Why would anyone take a week of week of funds and lose out on 6mo of MSP?

Well he sent me the "new" contract. Apparently there is an AFI that says if a recruiter makes an error on your contract, its the signers fault, even if you signed in good faith that what you see is what you get. So there was email traffic appended to my new contract from months after I started residency saying the recruiter was wrong, it should have been 4.5, and that he needs to reaccomplish that page. They couldn't find that in their system cause I never would have been F'ing ******ed enough to sign that. But they recoded it to 4.5 with a simple email.

When i asked what my options were, I could file for a record dispute. He said if i did they would provide me with the AFI. Then he said i was just trying to get out of my obligation to the government.

So there you have it. If you sign a contract make sure the dates code to exactly the number of years. Ironically the only reason im trying to fight it is so I can re-up without getting screwed from MSP cause those rules are just as stupid. I'm gonna file an appeal but I can guess the result. Ill update with results

Whoever recalculated you to 4.5 needs to reacquaint themselves with the actual rules, as they are completely wrong, and that is not how any of the thousands of other physicians (most of whom had an intro week for inprocessing) has their entry and payback calculated. It sounds like it is going to be a giant pain to fix, but ultimately, your obligation should be changed back to the appropriate 4.

The problem isn't the recruiter it is this interpretation that any residency extension of even one day requires a six month addition to the payback. Another way to look about getting around this is to look and see the actual dates of your residency program. If it's listed as not including the check in time then you could argue that. If it does then you could see if the program could change the dates and go that way as well.

Don't you think his recruiter "fixing the glitch" had an obligation to bring him into that discussion at the time? Would have been far easier to fix then or not sign up. I think there's plenty of blame there.

Yeah actually I forgot about that part when I was typing my response by telegraph. The recruiter gets to be back in the sin bin.

My recommendation is to become a civilian. You aren't going to do a career from FAP anyway.

As someone who is considering FAP and open to the idea of Navy career, could you elaborate on your rationale? For a couple of reasons, I likely won't get the HPSP and I was *considering* FAP because I actually would like to enter into service, but not too hard pressed in either direction.

Boy I wish any of that came as a surprise. It's not that I've heard the exact story before, but when it comes to lack of attention to detail resulting in a massive problems requiring multiple man-hour-weeks to fix, that seems to be military standard. This is exactly why I got verification of my release date from my S-1 in writing. What a CF.

Warning, that may not be accurate. I'd get the info from HRC directly. Try Separations - I'd recommend calling.

Ask me how I know...
I called HRC multiple times, and was told each time that they couldn't provide that information - it had to come from S-1.
