I applied for fee waiver last month but haven't heard anything. They said it's because I didn't create an application until last week, and the normal processing time is 3-4 weeks. I'm sure I'll get the FW eventually. I don't want to wait 3-4 weeks, but figured it would cost me an additional $150 to submit my app without a FW :scared:

Also, AACOMAS hasn't received my transcript or MCAT report yet. Do they wait for those stuff before processing your application?

I believe if you read the details it says that you have to apply before a cutoff date in order to be considered. There is also a limited 'supply' of fee waivers..

you need to start the application before you apply for the waiver. but since you didn't it should take about 1 week after you started everything to get an email response from aacomas regarding the fap.

have u called aacomas to explain your situation?

How long did it take everyone to hear a decision back on their FW application? I am concerned about continuing to wait for a decision only to find out all funds have been exhausted and I will have waiting for no reason. I sent in the FW application on 5/26 (evening) and it was processed as "received" by AACOMAS on 6/1. Since it is a real financial hardship, I do not mind waiting if I will get it (my EFC is 0, so I know I qualify), but my application has been complete for a while now (transcripts received and all) and I'd hate to delay my application 3 weeks total (more if you include the added verification process time at the end of June compared to the beginning) for no reason. Any advice as to what I should do?

Also, how does the FW work? For example, the FW covers the first three schools, so $175 + 32 + 32. If I apply to 4 schools do I just have to pay $32? Or do I have to pay $175 + $32 per additional school? It is the $175 that is killing me. I'm going to go ahead and submit my application if they are just waiving the $32 3x and I still have to pay the $175 regardless. I hope this made sense. Thanks.

PS. Is there any chance they start verifying your transcripts once you have a "check" for that section, before you pay and submit? Wishful thinking...

facepalm indeed...wow.

Anyway, anyone with an answer want to chime in? (Clarification...since there seems to need to be one...this is for those applying to *medical* school)

For AACOMAS--it is 3 schools; for AMCAS it is 14...from AACOM website: "If you receive a fee waiver, you may apply it to a maximum of three osteopathic college applications.
If you receive a waiver, but wish to apply to more than three colleges, beginning with the fourth
designation, you must pay the standard application fee. For example, to apply to one additional
college (four total), you must pay the standard AACOMAS fee for one college; to apply to two additional
colleges (five total), you must pay the standard fee for two colleges."

Oops, sorry! I mistook this for a similar thread in Pharm forum 😀

I am aware of what it says in AACOMAS - I read those instructions. However, (and perhaps it is just my poor interpretation) it is unclear to me as to whether this "standard AACOMAS fee for one college" is the $175 or $32. If anyone has the answer to this directly, that would be appreciated. Also, if anyone could chime in on how long it took them to hear back on their FW after it was received by the office, that would be helpful. I am aware that in AACOMAS it says it may take up to 2-4 weeks, but I was hoping for personal accounts. Thanks in advance.

How long did it take everyone to hear a decision back on their FW application?

For ref it was 10 days between when they received my FW App and when they notified me with their decision. This was at the beginning of May however.

I also wondered about how to interpret that bit about applying to more than 3 schools. To me it sounds like the 4th school is $175. I would also like to here from someone who has submitted to more than 3 schools and paid with a fee waiver regarding this!

I just wanted to help anyone else who has the same question. I got the approval today - they have not exhausted all funds as of 6/9/11 when I emailed them. I was approved today, 6/10/11 and was marked as "received" on 6/1/11 - so 9 days total turn around time.

As far as how much it waives, it waives the $175 + 32 + 32 and each additional school you apply to is $32. For example, I applied to 14 DO schools and it only cost me $352 after the FW was applied. This is $32 per school X 11 schools (not waived) = $352. I hope this helps.

Awesome! thanks for the info!
