Farily Extensive Criminal Record

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Juliedi, do you mind if I ask what application had that request?

Also I thought most applications asked if you had ever been arrested as opposed to convicted?

As I remember, some applications did ask if you had been arrested, some asked if you'd been convicted, and some didn't ask anything about it at all. Sorry, I can't remember which schools asked these questions on the secondary.

I was talking about the criminal background check done after you are accepted or waitlisted at certain schools. You can check in the MSAR which schools request a criminal background check. (This was for Temple though, fwiw.)

Actually not true, but I appreciate the rest of your input. I get the feeling that the lawyer is trying to cover his own tail by not telling me conclusively that I don't have to mention them...?
It's NOT a good idea to omit information, even if you've been dismissed from the charges, because if you do omit it and somehow the med schools find out that you didn't mention them it would turn against you. Rather, be honest and mention that you were dismissed from the charges. My med school advisor told us the same thing. It's better to explain rather than omit

Answer the questions that you are asked to the best of your ability. Do not volunteer information that was not asked. If you are asked about having ever been convicted... of a felony, don't volunteer information about a misdemeanor.

Every adcom member and every dean of admissions was once a teenager. Many of us are or have been the parents of teenagers. We know that things happen, even in the best families, and that sometimes things turn out ok despite some rocky years.

It makes no sense to say, "anyone who screwed up as a teenager is beyond redemption. If you fall in with the wrong crowd, the door to some careers is shut forever regardless of whatever else you do."

OP: You will need to report some of the things that happened in the past and they will be taken into consideration with the rest of your record. Adcoms tend to be merciful as long as you weren't involved in fraud, drug dealing, terrorism, theft, sex crimes or violent crime.

I was in a similar boat applying and sent a message with more details and advice 🙂

LizzyM, I was hoping I would hear from you. That's encouraging.
