I completed the survey at the end, and then I saw the "print out" page confirming that I sat for that day's test session. But then I got a Fatal Error Message, Contact Proctor blah blah,,, but it also said something like "Your information has been saved".

They couldn't give me that print out page, but gave me a substitute instead.

Anyone else experience this? Even though it said "your info is saved, etc", I'm still wondering whether in fact all my answers were submitted to the NBME (ie: like that Seinfeld episode where he's waiting for an important phone call, and his mom calls and he says, "Mom I have to hang up, I'm expecting an important call", and then he says, "Yes I know I have call-waiting, but I don't trust it in an emergency", lol!)

Thanks.

I was taking a practice NBME while prepping for step I and my power went out. I was able to go to school and pick up at the exact same question I left off on.

I'm pretty sure the NBME backs up its data after every question. Plus, if you contacted the proctor and all that jazz, you've done everything you can do. I would try not to sweat it.

oh snap....hopefully it works out ok. i've also heard that your test is saved automatically so it should be alright

I posted this in the Step 2 forum but that's a pretty quiet forum, and I thought I'd try my luck here to try to get as many peoples' inputs as possible. Won't hurt:

I know it isn't the same, but that happened to me when I took the MCAT. The computer I was using actually had a BSOD and shut down right at then end of the test. Everything ended up being fine though

Everything ended up being fine.. other than the ruined pair of underpants you were wearing as well as the ruined computer screen in front of you that you threw to the ground..

Seriously I think I'd freakin lose it.

jesus dude... that's pretty crazy... i'm not sure how I would've handled something like that...

Thanks for the input guys.

Any med students wanna chime in as well about the OP?

I think this is a question for prometric. I imagine that it will be fine, but I would bother them until they tell you everything is fine.

Yeah I tried to play it cool, but I was freaking out pretty bad. They made me fill out a bunch of paperwork due to a "testing irregularity"

The same thing just happened to me. I had completed the survey after Step 2CK and was reading the confirmation message before clicking "close" and suddenly the computer restarted itself, as if there had been a power surge. The administrator tried to log back into the test to print the confirmation and then got a message that said "FATAL ERROR TEST IS COMPLETE" or something along those lines.

Anyway, they gave me a makeshift substitute confirmation, but that does very little to calm my nerves. The admin told me that he has been doing this for 10 years and seen this happen "half a dozen" times and that it has not been a problem, since answers are continuously saved. Still....

I called Prometric's main number and they told me the same thing. The lady I spoke to said that there "is a very high probability" that there will not be a problem. She also offered that I could call the NBME next week. Great, have a nice weekend, right?

Anyway, logically, I think that everything will be fine. But, emotionally, I am on the edge!!!

Keep me posted on what happens with you and I'll do the same!

i had this happen during step 1. the fatal error screen came up, and they were not able to give me a confirmation of having taken the test. i called prometric and nbme- they said i would have to wait till the scores came out to see if the answers had gone through...
end result: it went through and the score was posted on time.
good luck, hope yours turns out ok as well!

I worked as a TCA at Prometric for 3 years. Although uncommon, we also had tests (not only medical) end with a fatal error. This DOES NOT affect the test - it is strictly a hardware or software problem on the particular computer you are working on. ALL answers are saved on the server in the back room - NOT the computer you are working on. So even if YOUR computer crashes, your answers are saved and transmitted. Also, whenever something like this happens, the TCA writes a problem report which is sent to both Prometric and the testing agency (NBOME in this case). This report describes what test you were taking and what occurred and when. So you are also covered in case something WOULD go wrong. In my 3 years I had many people return for Step 1, 2 etc. and all said that there was never a problem with their scores after a fatal error. So relax.....

^^ Well, just to let you know, the score report came in as normal.

(don't ask how I did, thanks)
