Let me set the scenario: You just finished a ridiculously difficult (insert hardest med subject here) exam, or if you’re further up the food chain, a brutal shift, what you reach for? Not just what is available, I mean your favorite all-time drink. Then if you want, elaborate why (i.e. high ETOH content, or just plain good)

I thought this might be a good way to explore outside of my knowledge for post-exam/shift stress relief.

Let me start: I would go for Fat Tire amber ale in a frosted glass (nothing smaller than 24oz.) This puppy is not too sharp, but just enough hops, clean, and just tastes outstanding. 😀

With that, what’s yours?

A gin and tonic. The gin, strictly, Bombay Sapphire. And a pipeful of Borkum Riff's vanilla blend. :b:

Very good call. That and a gin gimlet are my summer drinks of choice...nice and refreshing. Other times, I would go for an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan, with Maker's Mark or Crown Royal, respectively (if someone else is buying, that is 😀).

Of course, I only drink this at home. I can't find a local bar that stocks Bombay, they all stock Beefeater, which I do not like at all. Too... strong and very poorly aromatic. 😡

And the tonic, also, strictly schweppes. I'm a pain in the ass of a sybarite when it comes to my alcohol and tobacco. 😀

If I drop off at a bar, it's usually a chilled red ale in a chilled glass... One, or several.

And if I'm looking to get plastered, Jose Cuervo reposado, shot by shot. 👍

start off with a nice glass of white wine at home. when i'm out, it's grey goose vodka and tonics all nite..i love the cool crisp taste of a vodka tonic with lime...mmmmmmmmmn😉

Hmmm...certainly agree with the drink, but I usually reserve the Sapphire for my gimlets. I kind of prefer the little bite of Tanqueray with my tonic. Another treat is to add a dash of grapefruit juice with the tanq & tonic.

Back to the question, however, I think I'd go for a Dos Equis. If I were in colder climates, likely a Bass in a chilled mug. I like to keep it light that early in the day. (Don't you DARE mention lite beer :meanie:)

La crema pinot noir
or
belvedere and soda with a lime

When I can't get my drink on I'm obsessed with lime perrier

The original, Coca Cola.

I've never had Tanqueray or gimlet. I will have to try them. As well as the grapefruit juice thing. 😎 👍

ahhhhh. a Black and Tan. Half Guinness and half Bass. scratch that. not one, several.

And it's gotta be the real stuff too, not the crap brewed down here.

If that's not available, then a huge pitcher of Terminator Stout from McMennamin's will fill the gap nicely.

Fat Tire goes great for "Fluid Rounds" which back home means Pizza and Beer (or Beer and Pizza, depending on how *(&!)(!&ked up the day was)

McEwen's IPA. Best IPA out there. Or maybe a Hoegaarden, if I'm feeling fruity. Which is often.

Straight Jameson's Irish Whiskey. That'll do the trick for me nicely.

The original, Coca Cola.

He definitely said "soft drinks not allowed" right in the title of the thread (though it's possible he added this after seeing your post).

As for me, I don't drink alcy-hall, so it'd be a nice bottle of water.

Mmm...Crown Royal Manhattan. Yep, that's it! 👍

I don't know much about drinks (and dislike beer, though I haven't tried IPAs), so I usually go for G&T w/ a lime. I never specify my gin, but I don't drink much so I'm told if I'm gonna go have one or two, I may as well get the good stuff. I'll try to remember next time!

Grapefruit juice eh? Interesting thought...

white russian 😎

bathrobe optional
HAHAHAHA. Easily in my personal top 5 of greatest films in the history of the universe.

White Russian is a favorite for me, too. Consisting specifically of Tito's vodka (made here in Texas and highly highly highly recommended), Kahlua, and light cream.

I can't help but think of my poor college days, when I was less of a snob about my liquor. My roommate and I drank White Russians consisting of Skol vodka, Sabroso liqueur, and whole milk. I have no clue how we tolerated such nastiness.

Beefeater is actually a premium gin usually thought of as one of the better examples of a London Dry Gin. Drink whatever tastes good though. Personally I think all Gin tastes like you're licking a Christmas Tree.

A little knowledge to impress your friends--the winner of best gin in the world is a gin from New Zealand called South Gin. It's impossible to get in the US so far. Tanq. 10 won it a couple of years ago.

My personal favorite drinks are,
Makers and Gingerale
Van Winkle Family Reserve neat w/ a splash of water
Speedway Stout from Alesmith
Asahi Kuronama

hazelnutinin.....mmmmmmm.....

I LIKE THE RECIPE. IN MY CASE, I SLASH OUT VODKA - FIT IN SOME HENNESSEY. THIS IS THE LIFE

Really, just a splash, enough to color the drink.
1) ice
2) gin
3) tonic (yeah schweppes is good)
4) juice of a lime slice, then rim the glass
5) +/- grapefruit juice (if so, go for a tall glass)
6) couple turns with a drink stir
7) enjoy!

I know, but if we always followed the rules, life would be a bore. Besides not everyone likes alcohol. (Don't worry, I understand if you're still grasping onto college and its lifestyles. I know that some people want to milk it out for all it's worth before it slips away. And I also understand the wine snobs who justify their alcoholism with a false sense of sophistication. Cheers!)

don't tease me people . . . i have an exam manana

i started a similar thread last year. i'll stick with the same tried and trusted:

scotch. neat. bowmore, dalmore, glen foyle, balvenie, mccallan, walker black, they're all good.

if anyone comes across a black single malt called Cu Dore (Galic for "Black Dog"), pick it up and throw it back. good stuff!!! i picked some up in istanbul and was very impressed. but beware, the black dog bites hard!

a bit harsh huh? alot of people who drink occasionally aren't alcoholics. And a glass of red wine a day is actually considere a healthy habit. Its cool if you don't dig alcohol . . . but you don't need to hate on someone who likes a nice glass of wine every now and again. When I drink its a glass of wine chosen to fit a fancy meal at home with my husband . . . a far stretch from clinging to a college lifestyle or alcoholism.

I think he's referring to the ORIGINAL Coca Cola, which featured cocaine in it, if I recall correctly. At least, that's what popped in my head.

As for me, a glass of wine will do the trick. Or raspberry vodka/lemonade.

A snakebite - pint glass. It's half lager (preferred Smithwicks or Carlsberg) + 1/2 cider (Bulmer's preferred) + a dash of blackcurrant juice or Ribena would do. Mmm nice, and gets you smashed fast. Not a classy drink, but defo takes the edge off 😉

McMennamin's I'm not familiar with. Is that a bar/brewery?

Oh, and great responses, I'm learning alot! Frankly thought there would be more wine drinkers out there (perhaps I'm sterotyping...) anyways, good stuff. 👍

P.S. to BAM!: not everyone who likes alcohol is a.) an alcoholic or b.) clinging on to undergraduate days. But if coke makes ya happy go for it!

I am happy to be clinging to my undergraduate existance. It keeps me young and spry.

I am all about the dark beers. Just finished a week of exams, and I went for Victory imperial stout. Tastes great, and 12% alcohol. I am also a big fan of Bell's double creme stout, and Skullsplitter scotch ale.

A mug of hot water: caffeine-free, calorie-free, alcohol-free. And cheap, very cheap. And it warms you up.

Where on God's cold, frozen earth are you? We're talking about how you kick back after a long day of your brain bursting at the seams, not how you warm up after a brisk run in the cool autumn air!

Something peat-y. And single malt. And aged. Warm, with exactly 4 drops of water.

I love Bombay, but drink it over ice with a lime. No diluting mine with any tonic water. Tanq 10 is pretty awesome as well.

Rum creme is a nice drink as well. As are many of the aged Appleton rums.

Damn, I sound like an alcoholic.

Interesting...I have noticed my gin and tonics becoming much more ginny and much less tonic-y lately. Really, it's just a splash or two of tonic these days.

This is the reason why I'm not allowed to make my own vodka cranberry drinks anymore.

Don't really drink gin. Although this thread makes me wanna go out and buy a bottle. Maybe next week... I'm definitely a vodka girl. That is if I'm not drinking beer. 😎

Perfect way to drink whiskey, You should try Caol Ila and Talisker for good peaty single malts, Connemara is a sinle malt peated Irish Whiskey that is awesome. The aged Appletons are good too. I have a 15 year old El Dorado Special Reserve Demerara Rum that's great.

Sounds like it's time for a gimlet! Straight up is best. If you order this out and about, beware of quizzical looks. If you're served a drink with the tiny onions :scared: , you just got a Gibson.

100% agree with the Fat Tire by the OP. I am from CO and am now in VA, I haven't been able to fine anything close out here.

Hmmm. You should be able to get any of the Fire Station Fives.

Can you get the Sam Smiths? They're pretty good.

Oh, the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a good one. Great with pizza, steak, etc.

ANYTHING from these guys is good http://www.blueridgebrewing.com/content/brews/brews.asp

and then there's these guys: http://www.olddominion.com/

Sam Adams is an old standby, always good. Then there's the ever popular Guinness.

Need I go on?

Haven't tried most of those, maybe I will grab them sometime though. Definitely agree with the Sam Adams though. Boston Lager is the best lager out there IMO.
