After decades of eschewing commutes, I am giving up my 60 second home to ED travel time and moving my family about 30 mins away from the hospital. Since I will now have an additional 13-14 hours of commute time in my month, I would love to come up with some new podcasts to fill that time. Currently I have Bigger Pockets, White Coat Investor, and S-town in my subscriptions. So what are your favorite podcasts?

You are not so smart is a great one, also stuff you should know for non medical. SGEM, Foamed, and Emcrit are some great ones for Em stuff. Also EMRAP but not free unless through EMRA.

Song Exploder is pretty great if you're a music geek.
Serial is a fantastic true crime type podcast, but it's totally addictive.
Very Bad Wizards is an entertaining philosophy podcast, but I frequently find myself yelling at my iPod (arguing with the hosts).

Stuff they don't want you to know is good and lore has interesting stories!

Criminal, Radiolab, and Hidden Brain are all very interesting and informative. StartUp also has some really great seasons. I also think EMRAP is worth the price of EMRA alone.

radiolab, freakonomics, this american life, savage lovecast, reply all, only human, science vs, on the media, the allusionist - most of these are regularly updated and great

if you missed serial season 1, listen to that.

Also... the funniest podcast in history is "MDWAP". You know what that is if you listen to it. Ive literally laughed so hard i almost wrecked my car while listening.

Not for those that are easily offended, but if you have a disturbed/sophmoric sense of humor, I promise you it's funny as hell.

If you like "pod save America", "pod save the world" is also great, and I'm a huge fan of "so that happened"

When I'm really burned out I like the moth on my way to work just to reset my compassion meter.

If you want mindless and silly (and sophomoric) "my dad made a porno" is quite funny.

I just traded in a 60min each way commute for a 20min commute and I'm struggling to keep up with my podcasts!

Agree with above, Radiolab is possibly the best podcast out there. So well done that it raises the bar for everyone else.

That would be what I was referring to above when I said MDWAP, I was just too embarrassed to write it, lol. Three british comedians doing a reading of one of their dads horribly written anatomically inaccurate erotic fiction novels. Comedy gold.

I'm personally a fan of it when I have other people in the car. It's glorious.

I'm probably the only person on here who enjoys whisk(e)y, but if you do too and also enjoy listening to less young men ramble then bourbon pursuit is a great way to get lost on your ride to work.

Howard Stern. Easily the best. Totally worth $30 for 6 months. Or sign up for a free month trial. His interviews are pure gold. He really gets people to open up, and as he's aged he's let go much of the shock-jock-sex-sex-sex etc.

These have been said and are all very good -- This American Life, Radiolab, Reply All, Freakonomics, Serial season 1 (possibly the best podcast story ever).

Here are some that haven't been said:
PLANET MONEY -- one of the best underrated podcasts yet.
SMART EM -- before the sexual harrassment stuff. Great if you're ready to nerd out on medicine.
BILL MAHER -- if you listen to this, make sure you balance it out with Conservative AM Talk Radio, Hannidy/Rush/Beck, etc.
ADAM AND DREW -- for nostalgia's stake. Sometimes Adam complains too much though.
ALEC BALDWIN : HERE'S THE THING -- also has a great way of opening up his interviewees.
COMEDY CENTRAL STAND UP -- video podcast and very funny.

There is SOOOO much good media out there to consume. There is literally NOT enough time to enjoy it all. Commutes are much more tolerable over the past 10 years. Enjoy killing the planet! At least we'll be entertained while going down in flames.

Sam Harris Waking Up podcast, StarTalk Radio, ERcast, 2 docs talk, ZdoggMD.

As an alternative, check out Bill Bryson audiobooks esp. At Home and Short History of Nearly Everything. They both have the cadence and meandering interestingness of podcasts that appeal to us ADD types

Thanks for the shoutout.

I'm always looking for good podcasts. I haven't seen NPR's planet money on the list yet. I also listen to the two emergency docs who go over Annals each month and cycling news.

Yea. One of the two annals docs is a frequenter on the forum. Definitely miss Newman on it though, but he had to go and....well, there's a while forum on it.

I think EM:RAP, Maryland CC project and EM:crib are the best medical one. I listen to Learn ICU and Medscape Critical Care Podcast - they're OK.

Didn't know you had a podcast, will definitely give it a listen - love the blog! Although I may be a little more Dave Ramsey than you'd like, lol. Thanks for doing what you do.

You've got to be pretty Dave Ramsey to be more Dave Ramsey than me. Also have that on my list of podcasts. Like watching a train wreck some times with some of the calls. Here's one of my favorites:

Well, I broke one of your cardinal rules: I didn't save in residency, but I did pay off my student loans. Dave would be proud.
