Fear for relocation

I am currently suffering from fear for relocation for coming semester. I currently live at Georgia. I got in University of Maryland Baltimore and Midwestern University College of Pharmacy Chicago. I am still waiting from Mercer but I am not sure if I will get in or not. I really want to be close to my parents because I am only their child and they used to be rely on me coz I am the only English speaker.
Also, I am not really good at driving (finding direction..etc) so I am so frustrated with this as well when I moved to this new places. I personally don't like to move to Baltimore area so I ended up going Midwestern if I don't get in Mercer. Nothing in Midwestern is walking distance.
Does anyone have same problem?

I can totally understand how you feel. I am relocating to CCP from Minnesota and this is going to be the first time I have even been out of state, without family! I just wanted to reassure you that there will be a lot of people in the same situation if you go to CCP! Chicago has a great transit system and I am sure there will be a lot of people on campus to network with and get help from!! Well if you don't get into Mercer, keep in touch we can definately help each other!! 😳 good luck!!!

First, realize your parents had a life before you - hard to believe - but its true!

Then, realize that if they emigrated here from somewhere else, they've done this once already - been non-English speakers in an English speaking world. If they still do not speak English, this may be the very best thing that happens to you and your parents....

Finally, the very best thing you can do as a child is to be the best you can be as an individual. I realize in different cultures that may mean you go back to live with your folks or have them come live with you. But, if the alternative is to have a job at Best Buy vs going away to become a pharmacist...well - you and your folks need to discuss your own expectations and the expectations they have of you.

Go home and talk to your folks. Your fears may be unfounded & based upon what you "assume" - not on what their reality is - or it is entirely justified - in which case, you then need to make your decision with them.

OMG! I have that same problem, I thought I was the only one. I'm in Georgia as well and I have to relocate to Maryland for Howard in D.C. I have no family out there, the cold weather is scaring me (don't laugh northerners), I feel like I'm going to get lost, etc. What I am going to do is go up there before I relocate with a friend and drive around to look for places to live.
I agree with jlpolla, everybody is in the same situation as you are. When school starts, everything will be better because you will constantly meet new friends that will help. Good luck everyone!

I also live in GA and will be attending MCPHS in Massachusetts. Boy is there a temp change. As directions goes, I just map quest it and hope that my travels go as planned. Once there you will get used to the atmosphere and will meet people that will help you out. Take this experience as a new challenge.

It's the opposite for me; I honestly don't know what I'm more excited about: going to pharmacy school or moving to a new city! I'm going to be relocating from Los Angeles to San Francisco, which isn't exactly out of state, but still far enough for me not to be able to come home every weekend (like I did during my undergrad). I figure this is pretty much my last chance to live somewhere else and try something new -- since I'm ultimately going to come back to LA to settle down, and I'm really excited about it!

Dimsum1, I'm not familiar with either of the schools you're considering, but do they have on-campus housing for pharm students? If you live on (or very close) to campus, you won't really need to drive. Plus you'll be surrounded by many other pharm students, and they'll make the transition a lot less painful. I'm sure if you keep your mind open and tell yourself that it'll be a great experience for you, it really will be!

I understand how you feel. I can tell both chicago and Maryland are far from your homeland. I am in exact situation. I have non-native speaker parents who has relied on me for more than 10 years. Also, it is my first time ever leaving my state. Also, i easily get frustrated when I drive new places. What I like to say is that you are not the only one!! I will also go to CCP so we might be able to be a very good friend. 😀

You're not alone. I'm moving from the east coast to the west coast. My father doesn't want me to go and want me closed to home but I can't help it. I'm grown enough to decide what is good for my future. Unless I have money problem I'm moving to the west coast. I'm scared but I have to have bowls!!! I guess I spelled that wrong>..lol
