Hey everyone--

I'm in need of your opinions! I attended my state university for undergrad and I've been accepted to my state med school. The two are closely associated with each other (read: the academic buildings of the med school literally share a campus with undergrad). I'm a little nervous about staying in the same place for the next four years. I don't want my med school experience to feel like nothing more than an extension of my undergrad times (although they were lovely. 😛 )

If I stay where I am, I'll save big bucks (thank you, in-state tuition!) and not have to deal with learning a new city. I'm having a tough time making sense of the pros and cons...Your thoughts would be great! Thanks! 🙂

 Yea I'm kind of in the same boat with NJMS since I go to Rutgers Newark. (Haven't applied yet though) I want something new; different.

Haha, good guess drguy22. NJMS is still an option, but RWJMS feels like a better fit for me...You didn't answer my question, though! Are you staying local by going to NJMS?

What are your other options?

i go to Rutgers NB🙂 da same skool as u....ima gonna tell u the truth based on my experience alone....

i applied to the BA/MD at RU-RWJMS..and they said that they look past the GPA and consider ur research and clinical experience as well. Well..my GPA was ok..it was competative and my research and clinical hours were good also..on top of that I have 10! letters of recs which were all personal and GR8!....yet everyone that was accepted to the program only had 3.9's and above and there were a few people(not all) that JUST started doing research so that they could put it on the application, and they got in...which i found ridiculous. But things happen for the better....i feel NJMS is much less competative and the administration is MUCH more helpful...

and the dean of admissions at RWJ isnt very nice...on the other hand DR. H is da best.

BTW...there is RWJ vs NJMS thread like a week and a half ago...u should find it and then make ur decision🙂

A GREAT point, Dr. Chiquita! Are you definitely going to RWJ in the fall?

I am waiting on one school (totally out of my reach). But if that doesn't work out for me, then I am 99.9% sure that I will be attending RWJ. I got into NJMS, Downstate, and Drexel, which I withdrew my acceptances from. I am expecting to hear from Tufts and Einstein soon. But I am pretty sure I am going to pass them up for RWJ as well. I really enjoyed my interview experience there. I liked the faculty/staff that I met. Overall, I got a really good vibe from them. I can't justify going into debt for Tufts and Einstein if I can go to my state school that's just as good.

Maybe we will be classmates?

Thanks for the feedback!

Disregarding the specific school, does anyone have any thoughts about staying in a familiar location vs. branching out?

Sorry, I already withdrew from NJMS. I just had a horrible interviewer, which ruined the whole school for me. I shouldn't be that judgemental based on one person. But seriously, he was not a nice guy. I actually went into the interview having favored NJMS over RWJ. But I guess thing work out for a reason. Hope you have a good time at NJMS.

well...if u stay in a familiar location itll be like living ur a shell. On the otherhand if u go to another location u can see the world and explore new things.......itll make u a better person🙂 more diverse rather than just same of Piscataway. hehehehe

Yea you can explore new smells. Newark v. Piscataway. Now there's a tough choice.

I withdrew from RWJ when I saw their school consists of a huge parking lot (with no spots of course) and a building. No people around though because they are all in their cars. So New Jersey. So Gross. I'll shell out the 15k to be in NYC or Boston thank you.

I have a friend who went to rutgers and then chose NJMS because she wanted a change of scenery...I guess the smokestacks don't bother her but to each his own, she seems to like it.

Hey stop knocking down my state. 😛 After 6 years away from it, I finally am excited about going back home.

That's good to hear, Dr. Chiquita. I'm sure Jersey will be glad to have you back!

Thanks. I'm telling ya...some people don't know what they are missing. 😀

From my experience, staying in the same setting where you went to undergrad seems like a good idea at first and then stinks in the end. I stayed for graduate school at the same university where I got my bachelor's (SHU...woohoo, NJ!) and the first year was great -- tougher level classes in a familiar setting seemed to give me the upperhand without having to readjust to a new area or get settled, etc -- but now as I'm nearing completion this May, I couldn't possibly have greater 'senioritis' and I regret not having the experience of a new place/people/etc. When I had a lot of work to do and my friends were going out to do something fun and I knew I couldn't go for the sake of responsibility, it REALLY stunk KNOWING what I was missing.
Just my two cents.
Best of luck with your decisions

Same here. There is nothing worse than reading the CV of an individual that goes like:

B.S. Hollywood Upstairs College
M.P.H. Hollywood Upstairs School of Public Health
M.D. Hollywood Upstairs Medical School
Residency Hollywood Upstairs Hospital

I mean, you need to diversify your life, explore different cities; that way, you'll have more to tell your grandchildren than, "Yep, Pa and I hiv been livin her' for da past, ummm, fou-y five yerrs"

I'd like to post in favor of diversification of colleges/grad schools : )

I'm from NJ.
Freshman year of college was in Lewiston, Maine.
The other three years of college were in Atlanta, Georgia.
One year of Grad school in D.C.
Med School in back in NJ.

If anything you get to hear silly accents.

Sorry for this.

God I'm bored.

I am in the same situation as you (couldn't make up my mind about whether to apply to NJMS or RWJMS for early decision) because of the location. I didn't prefer one school over the other because I think they are both the same in the end. But, I know that if I went to RWJMS, it would be just like going to Rutgers all over again. You would still probably be studying in LSM or hanging out at the student center which wouldn't be any of a change. I think for me, that would probably have an effect on my being happy at medical school and I don't think I would do well in my med school classes if I wasn't happy with the environment that I am in. I'm looking forward to ****hopefully**** going to NJMS and exploring the new area and seeing new faces.

Good luck with that Sunnny84! I hope you get that phone call from Dr. Heinrich soon!

Thanks. But, I'm actually planning on applying for EDP to NJMS for the Class of 2010 so I'll be waiting for his calling in August.

I can sort of relate to this. On the one hand, I am hoping and praying to get into my state med school, although it is located ~10 minutes from my u-grad. But I would definitely also like the opportunity to live in another city as an adult before I settle down somewhere. Assuming I do get into my state school, I'll probably go there--it's a great school, and would be the most convenient and least expensive option for me. However, if that happens, I would probably lean towards a residency in another state. Remember, you still have that option, and will have many others in your life to move, so if you like this school otherwise and the price is right I wouldn't pick a far more expensive school (like BU) just because it's somewhere new. But if you're unhappy where you live now and money isn't an issue, go where you think you'll be happiest. Good luck with your choice!
