Studying for the MPJE here and running into some differences in the way controlled substances are handled. I would appreciate it if you guys can help me sort out federal policy vs PA policy (any of you who are in PA, or just federal if outside of PA) and say CVS or Walgreens policy on controlled substance scripts:

1. Does CVS/Walgreens accept C3-C5 scripts sent purely electronically? Not an electronic script that has been printed and faxed... purely electronic transmission, no paper. Because it looks like federal policy allows C2-C5 electronic prescribing (http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/21cfr/cfr/1311/subpart_c100.htm#100), but I'm pretty sure the retail chains don't even take C3-C5 electronically?

2. Does PA allow electronic scripts for C3-C5? Does it say anywhere that C2 cannot be transmitted electronically? I can't seem to find anything, which is leading me to believe that it is just a "chain policy" that is assumed to be identical to law, but for the MPJE I don't want to rely on what is done at the chains vs what the actual law is.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I tried searching the threads first, but 237 pages of threads with the phrase "electronic prescribing" just didn't work out.

Controlled e-scribe laws vary by state to state. The DEA has approved them. Walgreens does have the appropriate software to accept them. Here in Wisconsin, we can accept controlled e-scribes, and I have seen and filled them.

Ditto for MA and CVS. We take all e-prescriptions that the meet DEA requirements. As a side note, NY was considering a law requiring all controlled substances to be prescribed electronically in order to eliminate forgery.
