I am enrolled at a huge state university as a part-time non-degree seeking student. After multiple phone conversations with both FAFSA people and my school's finaid office here's what's up:

FAFSA says I am eligible to receive some portion of the federal aid I've been approved for even though I'm part-time, non-degree seeking.

My school's finaid office says I am not eligible for any aid besides private loans, because I'm part-time, non-degree seeking. And they say this is FAFSA's rule... not theirs.

Am I missing something or is this really weird???😕

Haha... I love that your school is trying to blame it on the feds... Ok, here's the deal... it's school specific, PT students can get aid at most schools if they don't already have a degree, but if you're a NDS student, most schools won't give it to you, they keep it for the students who plan to get a degree from their school. I'd change your status to degree seeking, and if they ask, tell them you've changed your mind and intend to pursue a degree... you are under NO legal obligation to do so (think of all the freshman who don't ever finish).... then take classes as a PT student (make sure the degree falls in line with the courses you're taking)... I played this game...

Thanks sbb1016, it's nice to know what's really going on. Unfortunately I tried to switch my status and they won't let me in as a regular student, just part-time.

PT is fine, you just need to be degree-seeking...
