Hi everyone, I hope you can help me with a FAP question:

I am independent and received no financial help from my mom for all my education. In college, i lived with my step-dad, so i used his information, but now he'd passed away. My biological father is living in another country, and my mom living in another state. I want to enter my father info, but he's in another country. If i enter my mother's info, should I also enter her family size including all her children although she doesn't support me or any of the others, but if people assume I get help from my mom, they should also assume the rest of my siblings are getting the same help?

Sorry for such a long story, but I don't want to get screwed over on this.

Thanks for your time.

If your parents are divorced you only have to report one parent's income. If you report your moms, you would include everything like how she files her taxes including all her dependents even if you aren't one. They will see her tax forms and how she claims I wouldn't include all the siblings unless she claims them. They know she isn't claiming you either but they still want her info.

Close, but not precisely. Even if your parents are still married, you're only required to give the information of one parent. I only gave information of one parent and had no problem. Since I'm the only child, I can't give advice on OP's family size issue.

You should include all your mother's info, regardless of you receiving support from her or not. So yes, put in how many children she has. If you are independent, then the FAP should already know that she isn't claiming you on her taxes so it won't be a surprise if they don't see your name as one of her dependents.

Thank you very much for everyone's inputs. I really hope it'll go through. 🙂
