The AACOMAS website states:

"If you do not have a SAR for the current year you can submit a copy of your most recent tax return along with the tax returns of those that claim you as a dependent."

I did not go to school this last year so I don't have a SAR to submit. I have been working several part-time jobs but I made less than $7,000 last year so I did not file my taxes and do not have a tax return. My dad did file me as a dependent, so I can submit his tax return. But does this mean all I need to do is submit his tax return to the AACOMAS address? it seems very weird that I don't need to submit anything else. Do I need to write a letter? I read in other forums that I do but I cannot find that section in the website.. can someone send me the link or quote what it actually says about the letter..? I work from 6am - 2pm PCT so I can't call AACOMAS about this. Any help is appreciated.

Have you filled out the FAFSA? That is how you receive a SAR to submit. You will be required to fill out the FAFSA before you start med school anyway (though you fill out the FAFSA with the previous years financial information). Honestly, the FAFSA is very easy and fast to fill out, so I'd save yourself a lot of trouble and fill out the 2011-2012 FAFSA with last years tax information (you will need your W2 and your dads tax form or W2s). You do NOT need a letter, the site says all you need to do is fill send in a copy of your SAR, signed and dated by you with a self-addressed and stamped envelope.

I am in the exact same situation as you and just sent in my fee waiver application today. You definitely DO need a cover letter and the instructions for the fee waiver application for this cycle is on the 2012 instructions pdf that you can access when you log in to your AACOMAS account. The instructions on the pdf are much more substantive than the link given in the previous message. So I spoke with the AACOMAS support representative and was informed that all I need to send is my parents' tax files(signed) along with a cover letter. This is the case if your parents claim you as a dependent. The cover letter MUST include your name, AACOMAS ID number, mailing address, and phone number. In my cover letter I also stated that I did not earn sufficient wages to file taxes.

Thanks for the replies! One more question.. did you send in your parents entire tax return or the first 2 pages only? I know that for most applications the first 2 pages are enough but not sure if that's true for the AACOMAS waiver.

I will submit my fafsa, get the sar, and send a cover letter. Hopefully that's enough. Will let you know when/if I get my fee waiver.

ALWAYS file a tax return. Most likely you can and will get money back, particularly since you earned so little. Also look into putting a little money into an IRA. Many lifetimes ago I was a Financial Adviser, trust me on this.

If we do not have the original copy of the SAR from FAFSA, can we print a copy of our SAR from the FAFSA website? This is what I did and I am going to send it in on Monday, but I'm worried it won't be sufficient. I just put at the end of it my signature and date. Is this what everyone else is doing, or did you all save your SARs when they came through the mail? Thanks!

You should call them and ask. I don't think they actually scrutinize your documentation too much... It's rather lenient..
