I know this whole thing is a mind-game, but is anyone getting any good feedback from programs post-interview...all the stuff I've gotten has been pretty neutral. It's driving me insane! It's like being told by a guy that he likes you as a friend...

From my experience only a select few rock stars will be getting positive "we want you" feed back. The rest of us get neutral or none, so don't worry!

I've talked to another applicant about a program and we both got the "You were well liked, we will rank you very highly" response. I feel like unless they offer me a contract, it's simply a tactic or them trying to be nice. My feeling is, disregard any feedback you get, positive, neutral, or negative, and rank it based on where you want. Let the match decide the rest...

A lot of programs will say things along the line of "we like you and will rank you highly", others will flat out say "we will rank you to match or we will rank you #1". I know people who were told both and matched lower down their rank list. Our PD stays away from any feedback to the applicants about their application even for people he really likes and is pushing for behind the scenes.

TL;DR: you never know until you match

I had a few places tell me I would be at the top. However my #1 told me nothing even after I told them I was ranking them #1. I now know that I had been ranked #1 with them for weeks before I said anything...and they still kept quiet till match day. Some places are just tight lipped and it means nothing. Just make your list based on where you want to be.

Don't let it, you have to remember the applicant pool that SDN selects for. I know plenty of people in real life, including myself, who didn't hear anything and then matched very well.

I told my #1 they were my #1 and I got back "That is great to hear, we look forward to having you in the program." Hard to interpret that as anything other than what it implies, but still makes me nervous.

I would say that it is more common than not that you won't know where you stand with a particular program until match day. I know that I was largely clueless on Match Day, and was pleasantly shocked.

It really is. I kept asking myself, "How long should I wait before I send them an e-mail and let them know I like them? I don't want to appear needy, etc." I had -nam flashbacks to before I was married. Although, just like marriage is awesome in that you don't have to play those games, being matched feels just as awesome!

Seriously though, I'll fourth the above sentiment, way more common to have no idea where you stand.

What's the consensus on the right time to send these emails? Closer to the rank list deadline?

I was advised that the last week of January was a good time. For my #1, I knew they were done interviewing and figured that their rank list was likely already done, so the day after my last interview I sent them an e-mail.
