So I just completed my freshman year at Bryn Mawr College and, to be honest, I did poorly. I see people on here stressing about B's while I got a 1.7 in bio and calc. This makes me really worried about my chances of getting into a medical school/D.O school- ill probably apply to both.
I did really badly in my biology and calculus classes (1.7 in both) I cannot retake these classes for credit at bryn mawr. I can still retake them for a higher grade that wont be averaged into my GPA, though. I am really worried about my GPA and am working on my study habits. It's not like i spent my freshman year partying-if you know Bryn Mawr, you know that is certainly not the case-for anyone!
But anyway I am just writing this thread to ask you all if I should continue on as pre-med or just give up? Is there any chance of coming back and being a good candidate for medical school (like SUNY downstate? I am from Brooklyn)?
Also, could you all offer any tips for studying? What works best for you? Do you have any good time management tips as well?
I definitely welcome any other tips you all have to offer. Thanks in advance.
*oh and i score pretty well on standardized tests, if that makes any difference at all*

If you get straight As from here on, you can still resuscitate your GPA. Many folks here start off with a dreadful first year in college, due to adjusting to a new environment. But you need to figure out quickly what the problem is. If you can't do well in science, medical school is not for you. Consider requesting a meeting with a dean or counselor at your school who can help you with study skill issues or point you in the right direction for help. Take a light load next semester, or until you figure things out. If something is messing with your mindset, even consider a year off to get your life straightened out. Don't keep getting the same dismal grades if you really, really want to pursue your dream of being a physician.

thanks for your advice. It is greatly appreciated.
Do med schools take into consideration the school you are coming from? Sometimes i feel like I shouldve just gone to a city college and saved money plus a better chance at a higher GPA. So many of my friends from high school are getting 3.8s and higher. they opted to remain at a city college. I do not know if this is why or not, but they did so poorly in high school yet med school seems like a greater possibility for them than it does for me..

Not really. They slightly look down on CC stuff when it comes to core prereqs if you havent taken anything UD at a 4 yr university but other than that, they dont really give preference one way or the other.

You made your decision, just do your best to fix it and try to enjoy your life.

Because you are paying more for a private school, you should have access to all the help you need in order to do well. But you have to ask for assistance, or it will not happen. Courses taken at a four-year institution are definitely looked on more favorably (and do prepare one better for the MCAT), but not enough to compensate for a low, or very-low GPA.

yeah my science GPA is really low because of it and to be honest my other classes arent that great either. my overall is barely a 3.0.
ill just have to work harder thats all.
and yeah mobius my dean told me the same thing. i have to learn to ask for help if i need it.
Do any of u guys have any good advice for studying and time management?
knowing my situation, do u think i should take chemistry now and retake bio during winter break. would it look bad to not have taken this class at bryn mawr?
