I know it's common in pharmacy to just focus on the main problem or the main objective when you're working or studying. When you get off track or off topic, people remind you that it's not the point of what is currently going on and remind you that we need to get back to what we were doing.

But sometimes, there people who just ignore what you do and what you say just because it doesn't seem important enough or relevant enough to school or work. Does anyone experience this? How do you deal with it when this happens?

I know one choice is to just never talk about anything other than school or work, but that's not what I'm looking for.

OK, you are saying that when you are talking about non-work stuff to people at work and non-school stuff to people at school, that they ignore you? I probably would too, why are you trying to distract people who are working at school or work? I'm sure some would disagree with me, but I don't think work is the place to make friends. Save your scintillating conversations for your friends....after work and class. Bear in mind, I'm not a chit-chatter, perhaps someone who is more like-minded with you will be able to give you some better tips than I can.

I understand that, but everyone else at school and work likes to just waste time talking about things unrelated to classes or working and make jokes to show off how funny they can be, when we're actually there to be serious and get stuff done. When they do it, it's ok. When I do it, it's so wrong. I'm tired of how hypocritical they are.

You may be talking when they are busy so they might tune you out to focus on the job. I tend to focus on my tasks and only really talk with people I consider friends. I usually won't talk to people at work until/if a friendly relationship has formed and if we are slow. If not, I usually stick to my business.

OK man, I'm seriously not saying this just to be mean...but what is WRONG with you? Why do you keep starting all these threads about how persecuted you are? Here is what I have learned about you from the threads you start:

1. You are extremely socially awkward, even with people you know well like classmates.
2. You avoid talking to people in the profession and therefore do not understand that other people may talk about you.
3. Your classmates do not respect you or like you.
4. You have very strange ideas of professionalism - it is not okay for students to not be professional at all times, but it is totally fine for you to talk about non-relevant things while at work or in a group project.
5. You don't understand that people bitch about their jobs because most intern jobs suck and you think it's them trying to rub in your face that they have a job.

Maybe you are the problem. Ever consider that???

I think I didn't realize we didn't have those friendly relationships like I thought we did, just because we seemed to get along well enough and talk very often.

Maybe find one or two people in your class who you like and who seem to like you and just spend your time with them?

I do that. It's just a small number of people who are that way. The rest of the class is fine.

Bad idea, you're about to add a #6 to that list dealing with online people..

I think the OP needs to spend some quality time with non-pharmacy people. Kids at school piss me off too but I just ignore them all and hang out with my real friends. You know, the people you choose to hang out with and aren't forced to see every day of your life.

That's what I need.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

OP is a classic example of "that co-worker". You know, the guy that won't stop talking about their child's softball games, their ingrown toenails, and how their significant other doesn't wipe down the sink when he shaves his beard. It's very likely that you are doing this during a busy time or the subject matter you bring up isn't of interest. When I did my retail rotation there was a technician who would bring up weird subjects and say crazy things to me...I just ignored her. It's nothing against you...just shut up.

I think the OP does have good interest but sometimes people just have to concentrate and prefer not to talk.

When I want to concentrate and not talk, they constantly talk and when I ask them to quiet down, they ignore me or make a scene. I'll try it ignoring them for as long as possible.

That sounds like a form of manipulation. There are a lot of ways to deal with manipulation... cutting off ties is probably the safest measure.

Just find your close circle of friends and invest in them. Also, some people will dislike you for whatever reason. I worked with a tech that very much disliked me after a while and never voiced why. She would constantly mock me, ignore me when she wasn't mocking me, would mock me on FB in situations where we had mutual friends and I commented on something, and ignored me any time I met her.

I just ignore her. She's not a friend. I don't hate her, I have no reason to ask her why she dislikes me or start drama, and frankly I don't need to have her involved in my life. I just blocked her on FB to avoid any kind of social media drama that she may want to start (which is stupid in my opinion). If she doesn't like me that's her business, I could care less. If someone is ignoring you or if they dislike you don't take it personally. Just learn to cut them off and invest in those who do. If it's getting in the way of work take it to your boss or HR.

I'm with Carboxide on this one. Weird threads. Stop worrying about everyone else - worry about yourself.

Sometimes people just ignore others. I'm not sure if it's a self-centered thing or what it is. I think we might just be getting worse at talking to people in person. I usually just take the "only say something that needed to be said" approach

Apply what you've learned from SDN:

Ignore the trolls of the world.

It's a hard thing to face when people don't like you for whatever reason. It's hurtful to see how much they are into each other and how the flaunt how they are BFFs. Know this: after pharm school, most of those BFFs will go separate ways, just like high school. In other words, it's all BS. Ignore it.

Now, if they are making the workplace hostile, that's another story. Making a workplace hostile doesn't necessarily come through overt behavior. The ostracizing, ignoring, etc. can be just as bad, and some companies WILL do something about it depending on the culture of the company.

In knowing you personally, I'd say let it go. Some people are just mean girls/guys that never left high school. I wouldn't give them the time of day.

Do your job. Take care of patients. Do it well.
